Prozac is making me worse

I am a 30 y/o Male and have been taking Prozac for exactly 9 days and it is making me way worse then I was. I am now having emotional breakdowns where it feels as if the whole world is crashing down on me. I have been unable to eat now for 4 days and do not feel hungry. Has anyone else had problems like this? Please help.

I am on Prozac and it's saving my life. Honestly. This drug has a week-long half-life, which means it does NOT work instantly and it won't be in full effect for some time. It takes some getting used to. I was giddy and a little jittery the first week, didn't feel like eating, lost a little weight ... it's been about five months now and I am feeling less anxious, less self-conscious, more capable and focused, and ultimately, more emotionally even, especially during PMS (which has all but disappeared for me). My sex drive is fine. I would no longer describe myself as depressed.

I have put on about 8 pounds. I'm not happy about that, but all things considered, I can live with it.

All this said, every drug affects every person differently. I tried Lexapro a few years back and it knocked me out. I couldn't function. I hated it and had a terrible time getting off of it. I would recommend you give it more time, and if you really feel insane, give your Psych MD a call and see what s/he recommends. Pay attention to the side effects on the prescription listing. Good luck and swift healing to you. a

I and many others have experienced ongoing sexual dysfunction because of taking an antidepressant for just a short time.  In my case, it was prozac.

Already a couple of scientific articles have appeared about this issue.  That's not to say it will happen to you, but there is a lot that people still don't know about these drugs, a lot of supressed info. and a lot that will be coming out in the next 10 years.

I know a lot of people feel like these drugs saved their lives, but a lot of others feel like they destroyed them so I would consider you look into other options if possible.

good luck

I had taken prozac quite a while ago. I told my doctor I didnt want anything to to with this drug. I made be feel awful. I would get bad headaches and it felt like it was making my anxiety level go even higher than it was before. I weened myself off and now I am taking Paxil combined with Busporone, and let me tell you what a difference. All depression and anxiety pills have different effects on each individual. It sounds like this pill is not right for you, I would tell your Dr. that you would like to try something else.

Good luck

The first antidepressant I was on was Effexor XR and for the first two weeks, I was nauseated, tired, bad dreams and the worst headache I ever had.  After two weeks, I slowly began to feel better.  I'm not saying that this will happen to you - each persons body is different - so if it is affecting you this way I would put a call in to my doctor b/c some antidepressants can make suicidal ideations worse.  Take care and please keep us posted.

I took Prozac in the past, I did have a bad first 2 weeks, when I called my doc, he said sometimes your anxiety level is increased when you first start taking it, I felt better after about 3 weeks.  I was lightheaded, sleepy, cold chills, muscle twitches, and very strange dreams.  Hope this helps, yes, I did lose my appetite also.  Take care, hope you feel better.
