Does anyone know if drs can tell where blood in the sputum has come from eg. lungs or sinus etc? I took a sample in last weeek because ive had a problem coughing thick sputum which is frothy and contains brightBright beginnings red blood! I,m due to have some lung function tests in march but was just wondering if the sputum tests will show where the blood came from I would appreciate some help on this as I am a bit worried.
the sputum tests wont tell where the blood came from... they'd have to do a ct scan or other type of testing along those lines to make sure there is no active bleeding. id imagine a chest x-ray or CT would do it.
one thing the doctors will look for is tuberculosis, due to frothy bloody sputum, but then again if had sinusitis before where ill cough up a little blood, from sinusis though.have you had night sweats cough lingering for over a mo. also a chest xray will see any abnormalities in the bil upper lobes of lungs. if not i would not worry. if all youve had is sinusitis for a more than a few days the irritation will cause bloody sputum. take care
