Right rib pain

by Taterbug1958, Dec 09, 2006 12:00AM
I have had pain off and on under my right rib for the last 9 years. I have had all kinds of tests done. The pain worsens if I walk or stand. The last 6 months has been the worst. It's now pain 24/7.I can't clean house, grocery shop, walk to the mail box,  etc. I use to be very active, but not any more. I have been to lots of different types of doctors. Gastro, pain management, surgeons, etc. No one can give me an answer. I just keep getting passed on to another doctor.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
There is a strong possibility it is costochondritis (inflammation of the joint between rib and sternum. The inflammation around the joint area gives sharp pain on taking a breath. This can also cause tenderness on pressing the area which pains. An orthopedic doctor can diagnose this for you. Pleuritis and Pulmonary embolism are other possibilities causing shortness of breath with chest pain. A CT scan of the chest can rule out both.
Chances are that you have esophageal reflux (GERD), where the food in your stomach is thrown up into your food pipe or esophagus. This also causes burning sensation or discomfort in the chest area. Another possibility is hiatal hernia, where a portion of stomach herniates into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. This along with chest discomfort cause shortness of breath too. It could also be osteomyelitis of the rib bones or a mild fracture.
Hope this helps. Please discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
