Sores in both ears and anemic

by sewree, Nov 10, 2009 12:08AM
I become anemic very easily, and when my rbc count begins to drop I get sores in my mouth and ears. The ears are  extremely painful and, sometimes, I just have to push very hard with a fingernail to relieve some painful pressure. I have read that sores in the mouth can accompany anemia but I find nothing mentioning sores on the ears.
I mention it to every doctor I see, but none seem to want to tackle finding a solution.
Can someone please tell me what to use on the sores so that they will go away quicker and will not have time to build up that horrible pressure.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
The only thing that I can think of is that anemia result in retention of water. This could be causing blockage of the Eustachian tube. It is a membrane lined tube that connects the middle ear space to the back of the nose. Its main purpose is to check the ear pressure changes in the middle ear.
Try valsalva maneuver (take a deep breath and blow while pinching your nostrils shut and closing your mouth). This will help clear the secretions in the tube that connects the back of your throat with your ear.
Also try and find the cause of your anemia. Consult a hematologist.
Hope this helps. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined for anemia. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

The sores are not in the canal. They are on the  outer ear, visible when you look at my ears/

Does you suggestion, valsalva maneuver, still stand?. I would lkie a a stronger topical antiiotic with pain keller. Neosporean is just not doing the jub.

Thank you.

To: sewree,
Hi
Thanks for keeping me posted!
Yes, valsalva maneuver will help. If you have sores coming up with anemia, you need to test for the type of anemia. In all probability you may be having deficiency of Vit B12 and folic acid too. Hence only a topical antibiotic will not help. Take supplements of these and Vit C and see if it helps. If it does, please consult a hematologist.
Hope this helps. Take care!

Thanks for the info. I got the B12, folic acid and C and began taking them today. My family doctor is also setting me up with a Hematologist - you only find those in larger cities than I live. You reply is the first time anyone has said anything about a solution to my ears and think it has nothing to do with the anemia. I think they are wrong, because that is the only time I am bothered with in.
Again, Thanks so much.
