Strange Symptoms

About a month ago I started experiencing some very strange symptoms that came on very suddenly, and were also completely new to me. I began feeling extremely tired, disoriented, lightheaded whenever I stood up, extremely anxious/panicky, and experienced brain fogging (like I was in a daze of sorts). After these symptoms persisted for about a week, I began to get very concerned because my daily activities were a mission to accomplish. I missed quite a bit of class, and had to take about a week of work. During this time I saw my family physician, and he at first remarked that it may be depression, or that it was likely to be a viral infection (he did not specify what type). However, he also ordered a complete blood check, as well as a CT scan of the brain to rule out the possibility of a tumor. I initially had to wait about 4 weeks for the CT scan, but felt as though they were getting progressively worse, so my doctor requested an emergency scan. In the meantime, I went to see a naturopathic doctor, who told me that all my symptoms were a result of a virus. After seeing him for a few weeks, I began to feel like myself again, but in the last few days most of the symptoms have returned. I should mention that about 2 years ago I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and IBS, but have not experienced any of the above symptoms, except for persistent fatigue that has not been relieved by bed rest. If someone could give me some advice or pointers, I would really appreciate it:)

Thanks so much for your reply. I actually was not even aware that it was possible to have the type of blood work you described above. I did ask for my hormones to be checked at one point, but according to my doctor, I was "too young". I have actually researched a bit about adrenal insufficiencies, and the symptoms seem to match my own. I am going to see a doctor in about a week who is naturopath, and deals with each of the systems individually, so I will see if that is helpful at all. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of treatment are you currently undergoing for the adrenal insufficiency?

When you say that the doctor did a complete blood check, do you know what tests were actually done?  Your symptoms can be caused by endocrine system imbalances.  These imbalances can cause anxiety attacks, brain fog, depression, sleep disturbances, lack of energy and focus, etc.  A couple of years ago I was having severe panic attacks out of the blue, all of my standard testing was normal, so I was referred to a psychiatrist due to the unexplainable anxiety.  Making a long story short, I got rid of the psychiatrist when their tactics did not help.  I switched doctors, and my new doctor immediately ordered full testing on my blood and a neurotransmitter saliva test and urinalysis.  This is the most complete blood test I have ever had, it went beyond what is routinely screened in the GP's office.  It tested all of my hormones, vitamin/mineral balance, kidney/liver function, and neurotransmitters.  I have been diagnosed with an adrenal insufficiency, which is what led to the panic attacks.  It impacted the production of hormones and neurotransmitters and was at the root of my severe panic attacks and fatigue.  I have been free of my symptoms since starting treatment a year ago.  Prior to the sudden onset of the panic attacks, I had a clean bill of health, according to the standard/routine tests that had been done.  Endocrine system disorders can be easily overlooked because of varying symptoms that mimic other disorders.

Thanks so much for you comment:) I am sorry to hear you have being going through a tough time. Have the symptoms persisted since your diagnoses, or are you feeling better? I actually got my thyroid levels checked as well, but they did not find anything concerning. My iron was on the lower side, but my doctor told me that I was not anemic. My mom has been anemic for the better part of her life, but my count was not as low as hers.
