Sudden Eye and Throat swelling

I'm quoting an old post from here(there was no response to that particular post), as it is extremely similar to my girlfriends case.

"My eyes suddenly start swelling with some discomfort in my throat. The swelling is so sudden that within about 15 mins, my eyes are completely swollen. I get some itching in the eyes and throat. It always starts with one eye and after one eye is swollen the other one starts. First time it was not very severe so I ignored it. But the second time it happened it was very severe in terms of swelling and I had to rush to an emergency room. All the three time it has happened outdoors. Once I was in a Bus, 2nd when I was in a mall and 3rd when I was in a Hair Salon. 3 monhts gap between 1st and 2nd and almost 18months between 2nd and 3rd."

My girlfriend's case is exactly the same, except that it is more severe, with her eyes getting completely swollen as well as having real difficulty breathing.  She's been sent to the emergency at least 3 times due to this, and to this day we don't know what's causing it.  She has seen allergy specialist, but no answer from there either.

What can she do?  Has there been any similar case where a cause was found?
Should she go see a different allergy specialist??

Thank you Carol for your quick response.

I will definitely get her to start a health file.

She does have an epipen.  But the problem is they expire fairly quick and it's really expensive!
But I know cost is not an issue here.
And for some reason it always happens when she doesn't carry around with her :(

It is quite frustrating that she has this life-threatening symtom, but does not no the cause for it.
Looks like the only way is just to be prepared for another attack...

thank you again.

shawn.

callaway77,
This sounds like anaphylaxis.  Symptoms can include angioedema (swelling of the lips, face, neck and throat).

She should start a "home health file" with a complete timeline of her symptoms, medical care, etc.  Get copies of all tests and reports.
This is necessary because the problem will probably continue, and if she can find someone to figure out what is causing it, he'll need a complete history.

She should inquire about getting an "Epipen," a preloaded syringe containing epinephrine, so that she can give herself an injection if this happens again.
People who have this condition often keep an extra Epipen in the car, too.

I don't know what causes this, but very often people who have tick borne infections also have multiple chemical sensitivity.

Wishing you the best,
Carol
