Surgery - Spleen Removal

My mom who is 75 years old underwent spleen surgery for an enlarged spleen.  The spleen was removed on Wednesday, September 23rd.  The spleen as her doctors call it was PROFOUND.  The surgery was a success except that the Saturday following the surgery she lost movement in her legs and arms.  Here platelets have gone up she is on the low end of normal 150,000 surgery day she was at 45,000 - so during surgery she received platelets.  She has regained some movement in her arms and hands however she can't put any weight on her legs and has extreme pain if she even attempts to stand up.  She also now has low postassium and hemoglobin. She has arthritis.  I am not getting answers from any doctors except for the fact that they are telling me it is a reaction to all the pain medicines and it is a flare up of the arthritis.  Any thoughts?

Thank you and truly appreciate the information that you provided.  If you could let me know what thromboembolism is that would be great.   Just some additional information - she had several ultrasounds of her legs and arms and another to test her veins.  I am not sure exactly what that test was.  They also have put her on low dose prednisone(?).  I am very concerned that I took my mother in walking into the hospital and she won't be that way coming out.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
I am sorry to hear what your mother is going through. Loss of movement of hands and legs can be due to thrombo-embolism, which is a common complication with splenectomy. Low potassium and anemia could be due to blood loss or a complication of the original disease for which the spleen was removed.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
