TMJ

What can be done to help relieve pain associated with TMJ?  I am in extreme pain and can find no relief at all.  Nothing helps.  Is this even normal for pain to be this bad with TMJ?

Did either of you ever find out what the knot was by your ear?

At the very bottom of this page there are ads by google.  I clicked on TMJ Syndrome and through the links on there I found out about a book "Taking Control of TMJ"  written by Robert O. Uppguaard,DDS.   And "Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Chronic Pain"  by Pete Eqoscue & Roger Gittines.  I am going to try my best to find these books.  From what I read it is possible to get relief and in some cases even cure TMJ.  And you may feel the pain in your jaw, ear, or neck but the CAUSE of the pain is a completely different part of the body. (For example one woman used computer mouse all day, pulled the muscles of her arm and shoulder.  When she first went to the doc her right shoulder was lower that left shoulder from this.  After figuring out what the problem was and learning what exercises to do for it, she has cured her TMJ.  I also have a cousin that until today I didn't realize had TMJ also.  She sees a chiropractor for hers when she needs to.  Anyone else tried that?  She said it gives her a lot of relief.  Have to confess, I'm a little scared of chiropractors though.

the knot is below my left ear ,it is the same as yours, felt like swollen glands all on that side even under the jaw.felt like an ear ache that is why i had gone to the ent. last week he gave me a steroid pack,it felt a little better, but he told me to try an dentist/oral surgion.sometimes it even would feel hot in that area because of the pulling i guess stress and just every day activity would do it.i have been trying to keep my mouth in the relaxed position,it helps alittle, and keep massaging that area when ever you get the chance, its a muscle spasam so it needs to rubbed out.

do any of you have any old dental work on that side of jaw.sometimes it feels like it would be an old rootcanal tooth that is causing the problem, but my dentist said i would have pain in the tooth, and i dont.ther are so many mucles in the jaw and when they are tense the pain just radiates to all the areas on that side making it unsure where its starting from.detist said do not sleep on that side, causes to much tension in neck.

Wonder how all those people used to live to be 100+ years old before they had all these tests?

Well, I finally went back to work today, and got laid off!!  There went my insurance!!  So my CT for next Friday is going to be canceled tomarrow.  And there won't be any more trips to doc any time soon.  Can't afford it on COBRA plan and it expires at midnight tonight.  Life is great!  Don't know how much more I can take.  This just about did me in today.  Hope you have better luck.  Let me know what you find out at denist.

There are some dentists that specialize in TMJ. My dentist does. You are correct, most dental plans do not cover this. Only some medical covers it. I don't understand why this is!!!

I saw my dentist a few weeks ago.  I broke a tooth and had it pulled.  He kinda asked about a family history of TMJ but that was all that was said.  Can a dentist do anything for it?  If so, what?  I don't have any dental insurance where I work, so I was hoping doctors could take care of this, but as bad as this hurts, it would be worth the money to go back to the dentist.  Nobody else has suggested a dentist until you.

This knot has been here since April!!!  That is how long I have been dealing with this pain.  At first it never changed in size at all.  Then it started getting smaller.  Then all of a sudden, it got bigger than it was before and hurt more.  My doc kept brushing me off(or I felt like he was) and I finally changed docs when he refused to give me a referal to ENT.  New doc said on first visit I needed to see one soon.  But ENT thinks it isn't my ear at all, but TMJ.  He gave me med to take at night to keep me relaxed enough not to grind my teeth in my sleep and muscle relaxer to take in day when it hurts.  I can take the muscle relaxer and not be able to tell I took anything except that it makes me kinda drowsy.  No relief from pain at all.  I can't understand why if it is TMJ, why is the knot under my ear?  Why not on the joint?  He said he thinks it is inflamation from the TMJ.  Why is the worst of the pain in the knot and in my ear?  Why isn't it in the joint the worst?  Don't understand at all and am getting VERY frustrated because I have been in extreme pain for so long and nobody can fix it and some people don't even believe that I hurt that bad.

I went to my ENT 4 weeks ago. I was having ear pain (which I have had on and off for a long time) my jaw, cheek and neck felt full and swollen however they were not swollen. My jaw cracks when I open my mouth wide. This is all on my left side. The only thing is I have a small bump in front of my ear. It has not gotten any larger though. This is why I wanted to know about your bump.

TMJ usually is cause by a mis-aligned bite.  I had bad headaches daily for 6 months.  I got braces (at 29 yrs of age!) and the headaches comepletely dimished within a month!

Well, if it does turn out to be TMJ he had said it was probably infamation.  I don't know really.  The knot is right below my ear exactly where the gland would be if it were swollen.  I went for a long time thinking that it was a swollen gland.  Several monthes. It hurts in the knot and also in my ear.  Really don't feel a lot of pain in the joint itself.  Really confusing.  Am anxious to have this other ct done to see what the joint looks like.  How did they determine that you had TMJ?  Does it hurt in the joint or does it feel like an ear ache?

Thanks for the suggestions.  The ENT called in ANOTHER steroid pack today.  And another pain med.  The pain med helps, but I have got to get back to work and it knocks me out, so I will try Advil.  Go for another ct next Friday, October 13, maybe I will know something then.  What can be done long term for TMJ?  Please tell me you don't have to just suffer for the rest of your life with it.

I have swelling in my face and neck on the left side.  I also have hard knot under my ear which I thought was a swollen lymph node, but ct shows them to be normal.  The knot varies from day to day in size it has been as big as a golf ball before.  I am seeing an ENT now and since the med he gave me to take at night to keep me from grinding my teeth and the muscle relaxer to take in daytime isn't helping he has ordered another ct.  Looking at my sinuses and ears this time.  Says maybe it's not TMJ after all.  Don't know.  All I know is that I am in a lot of pain and have been for a long time.  And I am ready for it to come to an end.  Does the Advil really help?

For me the Advil helps. Only in high doeses though. I also have a knot in front of my ear lobe in the space that kinda has a dimple to it. Is this where yours is? Mine is about the size of a pea. Can you let me know what you find out I am and have been concerned......

I have recently found out I have this problem. Try advil 3-4 every 4-6 hours. Don't do this for very long though. Have you been dx with this yet? What other symptoms are you experiencing?
