The Unexplainable

My wife is 31 and we have three children. My wife's symptoms are as follows:

Severe Migraines
Confusion / Memory Loss
Vertigo / Sudden Dizziness during Stress
Hair Loss
Complete Lack of Emotional Control
Brain Fog
Cold Intolerance
Bone Pain especially the Knees
Frequent Bouts of Depression
Insomnia
Sudden Rage

My wife's symptoms began following the birth of our second child approximately two years ago, once they became unbearable we began testing and found a vitamin D of 11 and no other apparent issues. At first 2000 iu twice daily helped but soon the symptoms continued escalating. Suddenly we were surprised to find her pregnant again. During pregnancy almost all of her symptoms disappeared and we obviously had new concerns to keep us occupied. Following the birth of our son she felt good and everything seemed back on track short of some alarmming hair loss. After about 3 months she began having dizzy spells sometimes resulting in her actuallly falling, the hair loss continued and the emotional troubles worsened. Obviously we started getting to as many doctors as possible and still have no answers. The following are the tests we've had done and ones that I feel need done.
TSH 1.89 yOU/mL
PTH 17 pgs/mL
TPO 8 IU/mL
calcium serum 10 mg/dl  (has run slightly above 10 often)
Salivary Cortisol 0.020  0.011  0.011 all taken at 11:00pm

All of the Doctors we've seen have wanted to pass it off as depression or something not to worry about. I do follow medicine quite closely as i had wanted to attend medical school but have unfortunately been unable to do so. I had been thinking hyperparathyroidism but am unsure. I will be getting additional calcium tests soon I hope. I have also been reading up on progesterone deficiency and will have her tested for that as well.  Currently she is on a natural progesterone cream that seems to sometimes help but remains intermittent.

I apologize for the ridiculously long post but have really reached a desperate point due to how severe her symptoms have become. Any help would be incredibly appreciated.

Thank you everyone,
Husband Shane

So srry to hear about your wife, it sounds very much like hypothyroidism from what your describing, if her thyroid levels are fine, her blood work is ok,they should do a cat scan to rule out anything more serious,  it could be some kindof hormonal imbalance aswell but the symptoms you are describing definitely need to be answered, good luck and don't give up, that is not normal and I hope they find out soon!!

I think you meant to write to husbandshane. Sorry for all the things you have been going through. Be careful with the plaquinil, my friend went blind with it. It has a serious retinal damage side effect so do get your eyes checked very often and if you notice any vision changes get in and see your opthamologist. My best friend was getting monitored but she still went blind from it. The ANA is a poor marker for Lupus. You need anti DNA and there is another DNA test for that. These are much more accurate. ANA can come up positive for many diseases and even falsely positive sometimes. For example Lyme's disease patients are positive for ANA and MS and they don't have either. But anyway, I hope your info helps the poster and you keep improving as well.

I would immediately ask for an ANA test and autoimmune. I had so many unanswered symptoms and dr passed me off like I was crazy. He put me on Wellbutrin and shoved me out the door. Months went by and no change. Finally many more symptoms and I was very sick.

All said and done: hypothyroid, inflammatory/synovitis arthritis, sjogrens, and premature ovarian failure. I had hair loss, high Fsh and Lh, cold and hot intolerance, dizzy, dry eyes and dry mouth, migraines, weight gain, and a myriad of symptoms. Ridiculous really. I currently see a rheumatologist and endocrinologist and refuse to talk to my primary about it anymore.  I am on Plaquenil, synthroid, nabumentone, tramadol,  estradiol patch and progesterone, vitamin d, probiotic, eye drops and mouth wash.

I am getting better everyday  and so happy I kept pushing. It was the gyno that finally figured out the thyroid and the Endo that discovered the autoimmune.

I hope she feels better soon. Keep advocating for her and don't settle for a dr that brushes her off!

I am sorry about your wife's symptoms. Firstly she has a lot of migraine symptoms that I have the migraine, vertigo, dizziness, and during stress. I have all these things and my neurologist says they all migraine related. however the other symptoms may be hormone related. I don't have the laboratory reference ranges memorized and they different for each lab to some degree but I know the TSH is normal. Would you send the PTH and Calcium reference ranges? You may want to have her see a neurologist for the migraine symptoms. However, since the symptoms went away due to child birth (hormone change) then and endocrinologist may also help.
Is her progesterone and FSH in range? If you haven't checked those you may want to get them checked.

I would have her tested for anemia.  Maybe it's just iron deficiency, but you don't want to give iron if she has normal or high iron. Iron-deficiency anemia can certainly cause hair loss and all the other symptoms.

I would also have her tested for Celiac disease as that can cause all sorts of issues.

And I would start her on magnesium in the morning and calcium at night plus vitamin D 2000 IU.
