Tight throat - closing up sometimes...

26 male.  Suffers from anxiety from time to time... but my symptoms have been WEIRD!

About 2 months ago, I went to the Dr. b/c of bowel movement changes... and anxiety... he told me the bowel changes were probably just from anxiety... and probably a little case of IBS.

Well, food still seems not to digest too well...

About a few weeks after that Dr.'s appt, one day my throat gag reflex was extremely sensitive!
It got to the point where I couldnt even talk to someone without almost gagging... it was strange!

I just thought "its my anxiety, chill out" And it hasnt been that bad... sense... but my throat has been tight sense.
I saw the Dr. for this as well about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and he said it was just anxiety... and he gave me paxil 10mg and ativan .5mg when needed.

The ativan does seem to chill me out... and help some... but the throat is still tight... the gagging is gone pretty much.

But what I did notice tonight and lastnight, is everynow and then when I breath in through my nose... something in my throat closes off air! Just for a split second! It scares me!

It feels like my upper soft palate? I do have post nasal drip... and rag weed is bad... but I dunno what the heck can cause that? Or if its a spasm?

I called the nurses hotline and she was stumped... but she said i should tell my dr. about it .... "DUH" lol

I'm making an appt. tomorrow with him... just to see if he can look in my throat and see any irritation or something that could cause it other than anxiety.

I hope it is just anxiety... but what do you think?

I have an appt. on the 28th of this month. My Dr. last time still thought it was just anxiety related.

Because today, I havnt had any throat problems... and when I do, its mostly when I'm thinking about it a lot.

Thanks for responding... and I will post after my next Dr.s appt.

Thanks again.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
Gag reflex can be due to post nasal drip that you also have. It can also be due to gastric reflux or GERD. Since you have stomach issues, there is a chance that you have IBS or food hypersensitivity or intolerance like that of gluten, lactose, sea food etc. It is also possible that you have an allergic reaction to something you either ate or inhaled.
You would need to consult an allergy specialist or a gastroenterologist if your PCP is not able to help. You may try for a referral. The allergic reaction causing choking or cutting off of breathing can be dangerous. Anxiety too can precipitate this, but one should always rule out other causes. Yes, nasal polyps and sinusitis too can cause post nasal drip and gag reflex. Please try and get medical help ASAP.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

can throat or nose polyps cause this? or allergies? or is it most likely anxiety and over-analyzing and thinking way too much about it?
