Tingling & Numbness in feet & hands...

Hi i'm a 27 year old male, weighing about 80 KG. Habits include pretty heavy smoking (1packet) a day & social drinking......

Over the past 2 weeks i've been symptoms of tingling sensation in the palms & especially the feet. Also there is sudden numbness in sitting postures (especially when i'm in air conditioning or the restroom) & pin pricking feelings on & off....Must say that the symptoms are very much less - nil when i'm active  , but much more when i'm idling, lying down or sitting down on the couch watching TV...during the evenings....

Does this sound like peripheral neuropathy or some associated condition.... or could it be associated to a paresthesia or fibromyalgia ???

Now i'm also on the HIV prevention forum since i had a possible risk about 8 weeks ago.....my 6.5 week test negative.....& i'm still waiting for the 3 month mark to test out conclusively....

1. Could these symptoms be associated to HIV as in neurological symptoms observed in early HIV infection.

2. Could they because of stress & smoking as both are on the rise as i've been generally stressed out at work & the HIV fear has got me stressed & worried too.

3. Could these be symptoms caused because of any other conditions that may be prevalent in my body or because of any habits or external factors...???

I've been a heavy smoker & have had Irritable bowel syndrome from time to time....

I'm not aware of the symptoms observed in early HIV & ofcourse the HIV forum is not really a fan of discussing symptoms coz theer may be so many of them & they may still mean nothing, but are these sort of tingling, numb & pricking feelings observed in people who are infected......with HIV & are in the early phase...

Please advise!!!

Thanx so much for the response....I've been worried about the HIV situation which did result in the increase of my nicotine intake...... & some erratic hours of wallowing in guilt from the incident.....

Anyways as you said , like most of the experts did as well on the Hiv forum , symptoms are non specific...... coz i've not been under the weather with any other symptoms which are generally associated with HIV infection...such as fever, fatigue, swollen glands etc....the only symptoms i've had have been the tingling & the numbness...

The main reason i did post on this forum is i wanted to know whether any of my current lifestyle habits could in scientific truth cause these symptoms & i guess i need to fight out of the smoking habit......

Moreover the experts on the HIV prevention forum feel that my risk is very minimal...do you agree with this.....the vaginal fluids would have come in contact with the cut for about 6 -7 seconds & the only thing that worries me is the fact that the cut was only a few hours old....it was not a wide or gaping one, just a small cut & had stopped bleeding but was moist as it occured only a few hours before.....

I'm gonna be testing at the 3 month mark in about a week to get a complete perspective & how much i wish this isn't HIV...so that i can have the other symptoms checked out & treated & move on with my life......please do suggest any advise!!!! thanx!!!

Hi,

There are a couple of advise for you before we even start. Quit smoking and practice safe sex.

Now that I have said the most necessary, I think you say that your primary complaint is a tingling sensation and numbness, which happens through out the day and increases when you are inactive. and the areas most affected are the palms and the feet.

You then have three major questions. I am gonna answer them as follows:

1. Could these symptoms be associated to HIV as in neurological symptoms observed in early HIV infection. - Answer: You do not need to be concerned about early HIV yet. You dont have a positive test and therefore there is very less probability of having a false negative, let alone a chance to have an actual HIV infection. However, i will not deny the fact that peripheral neuropathy may be a symptom of HIV, though it appears a little later in the course. Perhaps, a definite positive test, obtained this time or a little later may help.

2. Could they because of stress & smoking as both are on the rise as i've been generally stressed out at work & the HIV fear has got me stressed & worried too.- Answer: Yes, these may be caused by both stress and smoking and this further emphasizes my earlier point where I said that a definite positive should be the time when a solution for the HIV problem may need to be tackled. Undue Stress and smoking resulting from it , is probably harming your body pretty badly, maybe morethan the HIV at an early stage.

3. Could these be symptoms caused because of any other conditions that may be prevalent in my body or because of any habits or external factors...???- Answer: There may be many causes for tingling and numbness. Vitamin deficiencies caused by Irrtable bowel syndrome can be one of them too. A good medical doctor can easily eliminate many of them by few questions and examinations. Therefore, i would recommend that you should see one.

Perhaps reading a bit about HIV and peripheral neuropathy would help you best. You may read this to get a better perspective: http://aids.about.com/cs/conditions/a/neuropathy.htm

Hope this helped. let em know if you may need more information
