Uncontrollable shaking

Hello,

I am new to this forum. I am not sure where to post this as I do not know what I have. Around 9/26 I had a strange attack. I wasn't doing anything strenuous or stressful, but I felt like I was having difficulty inhaling and catching my breath. I immediatley got up and started walking around, only to find that my legs had begun to shake so bad that my legs had gone weak and I was having difficulty walking. I also felt like my mouth was very dry and that  I needed to use the restroom and was burping and passing gas a lot. After a few minutes of trying to walk, I regained my normal state, walked outside for fresh air, calmed down and had some fruit. Later on that night, I experienced something similar. I immediatley went to the ER. Unfortunately for me, by the time I got there the episode had stopped. The doctor who saw me, checked me out and said I had hyperventilated and had an anxiety attack. I was relieved it was not serious. A few days later I had ANOTHER attack. Same problems, only I had noticed my bowel movemtents had become runny. So i called my doctor for an appointment. The morning before my appointment, I had another attack, only more severe. It felt like if I stopped moving I would die. All of my vital signs came back normal at the doctors that day. My doctor checked me out and said she wanted to do a blood test for my thyroid because I also had a goiter. So she did and the results came back that I did have high levels in my bloodstream for hyperthyroidism.I immediatley cut caffeine out of my diet, thinking this may help me. The next week I went for my scans of my thyroid and didnt have any major issues at all for a couple of days, no shaking, weakness, nothing. I had started experiencing little aches all over my body though. Never dehabilitating or severe, just an ache on my shoulder blade here and an arm pain there. The arm pain has been consistent ever since. It feels almost like carpal tunnel.   I had an appointment to meet with my PCP on october 17th and an endocrinologist on the 18th. That sunday and monday (the 15th and 16th) I began to shake again, although this time it was just the uncontrollable  shaking. I went to my PCP the next day and she said my scans came back normal so she was interested to see what the endo would say.  My endo said that the scans came back normal but he would do a second blood test anyway to check my levels. He also said I was slightly tachycardic and I told him about the shaking fits. He then prescribed me some propranolol (20MGs twice a day), calling my shaking fits "tremors". These meds seemed to work for about two weeks or so. Just this past sunday the shaking fits started again. They mainly happen at night now and the shaking starts in my legs and then my whole body begins to shake afterwards. My bowel movements have gone back to normal though and my heart rate seems to stay the same.  Sometimes it lasts a couple hours, other times 20 minutes or so. My hands and feet get extremely cold when this happens. I curl up under a blanket and that seems to help. If I just lay under a blanket and relax I feel much better. I can't understand what is wrong with me. I don't have
headaches or dizziness, or anything but I feel "off". People say you know your body and know when somethings wrong. Well something is wrong with me. I have googled everything from "anxiety" to "epilepsy" to "brain tumors". I have another appointment with my endo on the 15th of this month to check my thyroid again. If its not my thyroid causing this, then what is it? Its disheartening shaking for no apparent reason. Am I having a seizure? Do I have an infection somewhere? Is it possible that I have poor circulation from the meds?  I normally don't post in forums, but
I'm really scared. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance to anyone who reads this,
Joanna

I have had a thyroid problem now for about 10 years and from all the research that I have found on the internet and trying things out for myself which I do not recommend but that is who I am because I am stuburn. I told my doctor for four years whom is an endocrinolist that they level he is keeping me at is not right for me. He was keeping me at a 1.23 and I told him it needs to be lower well he wouldn't lower and my thyroid has not gotten worse.

For some reason when I sit down and raise me feet off the ground so just my toes are on the floor I start to shake and it is mostly on my right side. Lately it has also been happening when I push down on the gas pedal to drive a car. I do have Hasimoto's diease and from what I have read if you are just .10 off it can throw your whole immune system off and they are talking about the thyroid problems go hand in hand now with Endrometriosis which I have had surgery now twice and it seems that the past couple years it has gotten way worse.  I also saw that they may be changing the level from a .5-5.0 to .5-1.5 which I find very interesting because I have to be at the .5-.7 level or I feel off.

There is a website but I can't remember what it is that said that having a thyroid problem can be the biggest masquerade because they are starting to realize that if it is off just a little bit it has a huge impact to the body. Including the heart, how much estrogen you get which than can cause cancer, it regulates everything.I am not saying this will be the case with everyone but this is just what I have tried. I did take extra pills to try to see if it made a difference and it did so I went back to my doctor and said if you don't keep me at this level I am going to see someone else. Well he finally listened to me because I lost two jobs because of my thyroid problem.

Hi Kelly61-
It sounds like it is adrenal related. My son was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and he was doing better with it, but had a crash on Sunday.  He had too much stress dealing with customers for the holidays and he started to feel a crash coming on.  He had the shaking last night and got through it but was up the whole night, and tonight he can feel it coming back again.  These are hard to go through.  If your mom has a dry mouth, could it be that she is dehydrated? It is easy to become dehydrated with adrenal fatigue.  She should add a very small amount of good sea salt to her water. This will help.  Soaking your feet in epsoms salts and using magnesium oil is very helpful for being calm.  Please research adrenal fatigue- many people have thyroid problems with it.  Something to always remember- if there is one thing wrong in your endocrine system then there is something wrong with all of it.  I still am not sure why my son is having these shakes-he is drinking a lot, even drinking pedialite instead of Gatorade because Gatorade has too much sugar. Hang in there and I wish for your mom to get an answer and good health. We live in a very, very stressful world.

My mother has just started having very similar episodes.  They happened at 4am on two consecutive days last week.  She has hypothyroidism.  She has been taking Eutroxig for a few years.  For about a week before the first tremor episode she began suffering from a very dry mouth.  She woke because her head felt particularly pressurised (it has felt pressurised for about four years now but no one knows why).  Her teeth started chattering uncontrollably.  Then her whole body started shaking.  Her heart felt like it was beating out of her chest.  It is summer in Queensland (Australia) so she wasn't cold. She was terrified.  Her bowel motions became softer.  The second episode (exactly 24 hours later) was even more intense.  The GP suspects a bladder infection.  We are awaiting the results. I don't expect it to be a bladder infection.  I would really appreciate some advice.

I am having the same exact thing. Started in august and I went to the er. They gave me I've and sent me home. Was OK til now and went back in wed. Same thing. I just had an attack again and I done know what's happening to me! I was woken up by it this time. I have optic seizures but they come with migraines...nothing like this. My thighs start twitching until my whole body is shakinguncontrollably. I can't breathe, teeth chattering and its hard to swallow and my tongue feels thick. I drink oj and Gatorade and pedisure....thought might be low potassium or electrolytes but when I go to er they r fine. I thought low blood sugar butt hats good too. 2times when it happened I had diarrhea but not this time. I am so confused. I was tired. Fell asleep around 3am  then woke up to this at 6am. The nite before I slept great. Ten hours. I am 39 and I have a bicuspid valve, I had hypothyroidism but then I was on synthroid and it got overactive so I'm on nothing. No meds. Have asthma. What is wrong with me????!!

I also have had some of these symptoms... I have had it for a while now. going on for about 2 mths. It first started in the beginning of Sept. I had major surgery last year the doc. messed up on my C-section very bad.. I had to have two emergency surgeries following my C-section, the doc didn't sew it good enough and my uterus came back open.. I had a emergency surgery the day after the C-section I had to have  5 blood transfusions... then two weeks after I came home my uterus fell out non stop bleeding, I almost died, the only thing that saved me was the 22 blood transfusions.. then the emergency hysterectomy that took 12 hours to do...
I have had nothing but problems ever since, urinary tract infections, kidney innfections, a lot a lot of pain... fevers and shakes.. recently though I had to go to the er three times in a week because of the symptoms you are talking about... last month I started shaking uncontrollably, like I was cold but I wasn't... all of my muscles tightened up.. I let it go for about two days it would stop for a couple hours and come right back.. finally the third day.. I woke up I was not shaking yet.. but I was sick puking, and started getting a fever... by 5:00 p.m. my husband had to take me to the ER! I was shaking and had a fever of 102... I got there and they tld me I had a bad urinary tract infection and bronchitis... it was bad they gave me antibiotics.. the bronchitis took a while it finally cleared up in a couple weeks.. I had a fever for 3 days straight, bed ridden! the UTI did not go away, I still got it.. I have been peeing blood.. I had to get a shot of diluten it was so bad I couldn't even move... it feels somewhat better.. last night the shakes came back for about two hours, I was not cold.. it was like 80 degrees in my house... my muscles r so sore from shaking so bad. I am thinking there is something seriously wrong with me, I cant have intimacy everytime I do I get a bad yeast infection and the UTI gets worse, and I am pain for days?? I have no idea whats going on, I have a one year old baby that has a cold, and they have her on all kinds of meds to clear it up, and its not working. She is okay, but I am pry going to have to take her to er to get antibiotics because she needs antibiotics and her doctor wont give her any he claims she don't need them its allergies, and I don't think so.
also my chest has been hurting occasionally... followed by the shaking, I have no idea what to do, they tell me its UTI's give me antibiotics and they are not working, so what should I do I have no idea? I mean oviously there is is something else going on, I have had UTI's before this surgery and never have they gave me these symptoms, or made me sick, or made it so I cant have inticmacy... maybe its something going around.. I have talked to other friends that have been experiencing these symtoms also??

Literally just had one if these episodes for the first and hopefully the last time... I decided to go online because just as I got done telling my boyfriend I thought I was going to die and needed to go to the hospital (which took a couple minutes to say between my odd gasps for breath) it just stopped. This was honestly the scariest moment of my life. I really felt like I was going to die, I however couldn't get up... It was like I wasn't in control of anything with my body... My speech, my legs, my breathing, nothing... Thanks for your comments, they helped me and I will continue my research.

For the last few months I've been feeling lightheaded and getting intermittent attacks of waves of nausea. I'v also had this constant feeling of needing the toilet and going far more than is normal. Then a couple of weeks ago I began feeling feverish and achy. After the first couple of days I began to feel extremely cold and shivering violently. I took some co codamol nut it took about ten minutes to subside. I was in bed for almost two weeks, but when the fever was gone I was still left with the lightheadedness, nausea and achyness. I'd been away for 3 months and had been back home about two months when the fever hit. SobI had to reregister at my local surgery where Id been  attending for 7 years, but without photo ID I am not allowed to reregister at my doctors surgery. Please can someone tell me what is wrong with me and what I can do to get better?  i

Having read many posts now on different web sites it is obvious that this condition is much more common than I thought. Ten years ago I was I'll for about twelve months, which was all day every day and not in spells. The main conditions were head aches, mainly around my eyes and dizzy spells and terrible shaking which was all over my body but not always visible. During that time I had all blood tests available as well as scans and  any other tests they could think of. Over the twelve months I lost 2 stones in weight and thought my time was up. I was given propranolol for anxiety and ant depressants. After roughly 12 months I woke one day to find that it had stopped. I never found out exactly what it was or if it was more than one thing but most of it came down to stress.
Now over ten years on I have for the last month experienced almost identical symptoms as I did before. Tunnel vision, dizzy, nausea, severe shaking inside which gets worse the more I focus on it and a loss of balance and strength in general which makes me fall about when moving. Thankfully because of my past expierience with this I am able to get onto it quickly, having already had all blood test to show its nothing serious I now know that it is 75% down to anxiety. Yes that's right anxiety, a silly stupid little thing like that can completely knock your whole body off line and should you also suffer with other conditions such as depression or sinus problems these will make some of the side effects worse than normal. I had a very bad time as a child when I was in a bad accident with my father and was then forced to live away from my parents for a year and a half which gave me depression and also was the beginning of a 3 year fight against mental health issues during a period which I had two mental breakdowns. I now truly believe that somewhere along the line this has never left me and when other although less serious issues have rocked my life this anxiety and depression has reared it's ugly head once more. I don't think that everyone with this will have had something so tragic happen in there life but they may just be of a nervous disposition and probably a constant worrier as I am myself. Phobias are a very common cause of anxiety no matter how silly it may seem.
A fear of dying is the most common which makes it worse as you will worry more than most about the symptoms and actually make it worse.
Work problems, family troubles, even small health issues that you over worry about can all trigger this. My only advice is to keep calm, try not to worry and don't start looking for the worst things that match the symptoms as these are very very rarely the case. See your doctor and get something for the anxiety like propanalol and also something for depression as the anxiety will almost certainly make you depressed. Try to exercise and keep a good hormone balance and regular release of serotonin in the body. Do anything that makes you happy, watch comedies and be with people you love and in time you will get better. The easiest test for this is to just watch a film or something to distract your attention away from everything and you will calm down without realising. One silly symptom I also get from the anxiety is my belly jumps none stop. I can lay down still and watch it jump in time with my heart beat which is a sure sign that you have anxiety and very likely depression so don't get too down I know it's awful at the time but its not serious and it will go eventually.

I'm so grateful to have read your post. I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone, but at the same time, hope that you've gotton better. I also have the same symptoms almost verbatum.  I get a weird feeling then I know its coming.  I cant chetch my breath, uncontrolable shaking, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, and sweating, and some chest discomfort.  Then the frequent bathroom trips.  I've gone to the ER for this twice and both times they made me feel like I was imagining this.  Is there anyone out-there that has the answer to this?  Please this is so scary.

I was just laying in bed & fell asleep but woke up after about 15 minutes with chest discomfort & uncontrollable shaking so I got up & got on my iPhone & looked up uncontrollable shaking & it brought me here to this site I'm so glad I'm not the only one who goes through this - I do this alot - but saying its stress & adrenaline makes sense. I stress over everything. I can watch the news & worry all day about the littlest thing. The thing that helped me this time besides this web site is I took a Valium that my doctor prescribed to me for panic attacks a while back & when I have those attacks nothing helps except walking fast non stop through my house till it eases up -

I have been experiencing uncontrollable shaking, it first starts with wierdness feeling in the head then tightness in chest followed with shortness of breathe.  Then my uncontrollable shaking starts along with all the other systems listed above (NOT PRETTY).  I have Lorazepam for my anixety attachs but I know it is not that however it does help calm my systems when I get them.  I first got the uncontrollable shaking right after I have a  total hystorectomy.  The thyroid levels went wild and the estrogen levels going so low it threw me into these uncontrollable shaking attacks.  Once my levels went to normal then the shaking stopped.  FYI for the thyroid diagnose, it took 5 different blood tests to show that my thyroid was having a problem.  I am diagnosed with Hypothyroidism (Hashimotos Disease).  It is really scarey to have these attacks, yes I've been to the ER and to many doctors however only you know your body.  One other thing to help with the shortness of breathe THIS REALLY HELPS.  Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds and hold for 4 seconds.  keep repeating until you calm down.  I hope this helps you and everyone else with this problem.   I always keep in mind THIS TOO SHALL PASS.  Best Wishes

My 3 yr old son died in Jan 08. When I went back to work a couple weeks later is when I first noticed shaking in my feet. A few weeks later, my husband left me, and the shaking became from head to toe. Other problems occurred following the shaking. High blood pressure, and female bleeding problems. All of which were stress and anxiety related. I was put on Lorazepam (Ativan) for the shaking. Once I took the pill it took about 15 mins for the shaking and panicked feeling to start to subside. I still have shaking occasionally, but usually only in my legs and hands now. I had never had high blood pressure before the shaking occurred. I now have extreme chest pain and tightening in my upper chest if I do any strenuous exercise. I have had my thyroid checked, as that runs in my family, but it came back normal. So, I'm not sure why I am still having these problems. But, they are real. I also seem to have shaking and spasms in my legs after intense sex. So, I just wait til it subsides. Also, something I never had a problem with before. I know that someone suggested an adrenaline connection. The after sex problem definitely isn't stress related, but could be an adrenaline rush. I will be seeing a dr soon to see if they can figure it out. So, if I get a good diagnosis, I will be sure to post for all of you that are experiencing similar problems.

Just last night I was laying in bed with my boyfriend and we were watching a show on my laptop when my thighs started to spasm and shake uncontrollably. Within about 3 minutes of the spasms my entire body was shaking pretty hard and my heart was pounding faster than I've ever felt it beat. At this point we turned off the show and just laid down and he helped me concentrate on my breathing. In some moments I was able to stop my legs and keep still but in others there was no stopping it. This lasted about an hour but once I started concentrating on taking  7-beat breaths in and out it helped a lot. I had him just talk to me for a while, just telling me stories from when he was younger got my mind off of it and was what really slowed my heart rate down. Within another hour my body felt totally normal again (despite still being totally confused). I'm not a particularly stressed person and I've never had anything like this happen before, but it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one (even though I wouldn't have wished this on anyone). Although I am hesitant to go to a doctor for a consult after reading this and other forums as it seems like a general anxiety attack. In any case I hope that everyone in this forum is able to find a solution

This is kinda late, but I experienced uncontrollable shaking for a few hours when I was on a cruise. I had just gotten back from spending the day at the beach in the caribbean where the sun is really strong, not what im used to. I was exposed to the sun a lot, and like a couple hours later when it was timr for dinner in the ship, I couldnt stop shaking. It was the weirdest thing and it freaked me out. I had had anxiety attacks before but those were more like...twitching kinda. Anyway, my grandmas a nurse and she said it could be because of the sun. I fell asleep and the next day I felt mostly better. I looked it up when I got home and I googled sun poisoning I think? Anyway its one of the symptoms. Idk if any of you guys were out in the caribbean sun , but thats the reason for my tremors lol.

I am just (hopefully) in the last few days of a very nasty flu virus but yesterday early evening I started shaking uncontrollably and my teeth started chattering. After a while it subsided but left me feeling worn out. Again this evening the same thing happened and when my teeth started chattering it was a whole lot worse. So much so that my jaw bone was extremely painful. I had the heating on in the house but my spine became extremely cold. Any ideas???
