I agree with JGF25, My daughter also goes to a small private Catholic School & her teachers have been wonderful & very helpful. Know the different options for treatment including psychological counseling vs medications. I opted for Concerta & it has been working well for her. I give it to her 7 days a week because she is ADHD, know the difference between ADD & ADHD. ADD is only Attention Deficit vs ADHD includes Hyperactivity. But every child is different & the levels are different, some are more hyperactive then others as well as their attention span. These are strong medications, do your research and become knowledable about the different options. Good luck.
Here are a few things I think you need to know. First of all, not every medication works with every individual. It could very well be that the Concerta is not for your son. I tried many different medications before my son decided that Adderall worked best. The others gave him headaches in differing degrees. One we ended up in the ER with.
In today's society, school is so much harder than when I went. I ran home to watch Lost In Space and Ultraman, don't laugh!. I don't even remember doing homework at this young of an age. My parents certainly weren't helping me do anything. At any rate, a lot more is expected from our children at a young age.
My Son who is now 15 and a Freshman in High school was always a bit "off." I noticed very early on that something was a little bit off. I didn't have him formally tested, and yes there are tests that can be done to diagnose your child, until the 4th grade. He was in a small Catholic school and so the teachers worked with me. Once I found out he had ADHD, I put him on medication. He will tell me himself that he can feel the difference. He only takes it Monday through Friday. No weekends and no summers. Yes homework time can be a bit of a challenge to keep him on task. He has an IEP at school and I pay for him to be in a special program where there is someone monitoring his progress and advocating for him.
Now, think where my son would be without medication. He would have more than likely failed. His self-esteem would be in the gutter. From what I remember reading, kids that go untreated have a higher change of abusing drugs and alcohol in the teenage years. There are a host of other things as well that are not coming to me at the moment.
So bottom line is, there is testing that can be done by experts, Psychiatrists, and a true diagnosis can be obtained. An IEP would need to be written so that your son gets the accommodations he needs. This is the law. The public school systems have to help with this and they have to follow it. Lastly, if he needs to be on medication, then try something else. Like I said, we went through about 4 of them before we found that Adderall works best. Oh, and my son is also a sweetheart. He has a ton of friends and the parents all love him.
Good luck.
Hi there,
My daughter suffers from ADHD, she is super sweet & in 3rd grade now, she was diagnosed when she was in 2nd grade. I am not sure how your son is, but I can explain how my daughter is with & w/out Concerta, she just recently started focalin to help with homework. My husband was completely against it & now understands it & even asks me if I gave her the medication the days we for forget.
This is the reason I decided to get her evaluated:
For over 2 years it would take from 3pm to after 8pm to do homework with her, homework that would normally taker about 1 & half. She would get off a chair, get on the chair, go around the chair, drop the eraser, the pencil. The fights with her were terrible! My daughter couldn't sit still to watch t.v., she would go around the chair, jump around & go around it & over it as she watched a show. It was very nerve wracking to watch! Her grades have always been ok, but like I called it "she had ants in her pants all the time".
With the Concentra, she can sit & do her work, I am using the focalin to help her with homework only from Mon - Thursday, because the Concerta it's causing a down fall after 8 hrs & since she takes it at 7am, by the time she gets home it's effect has began to go down. We no longer fight with her to do homework & she is able to sit down & watch t.v. without bouncing off the wall!
We can see the difference with & without the medication in our situation. Having ADHD does not mean that your child is weird or is NOT SWEET! My daughter is extremely sweet & adorable! You would not know she was taking concerta unless I told you. I can tell you I am happy I made this decision because it's helping her in many ways. Although, my husband was furious at me at first, he now agrees that the medication has helped her.
I will agree, Concerta does cause her to lose her appetite, but I giver her Periactin to help control it & although she is very thin, she is healthy & is something I can deal with. From time to time she has gotten nose bleeds, but it's due to the weather & not from the concerta, she does not have issues with her lips.
Like I said before, I do not know your child, I only know mine. I consider my child NORMAL, only because she is ADHD, does not mean she is ABNORMAL. She just needs a little help to deal with her hyperactiveness! Be a bit open minded & look at your son's behavior & speak to his teachers & doctor. You can take him to the doctor & have them explain to your why they feel he may be ADHD. Listen to people around him and like I said, it doesn't mean he is not NORMAL! If he does have it, it will help him in the long run & you can always take him off it once he is older & learns to control it himself.
Good luck!
ADHD is an opinion; it cannot be proven by any scientific test. So easy to change a diagnosis if the doctor believes it to be another condition. In Japan, children diagnosed with ADHD are given L-theanine. This is an natural amino acid from tea proven to help with ADHD symptoms. There are no adverse side effects. See another doctor with your concerns. Despite the diagnosis, there is no law stating a child had to be given any drug whatsoever. Drugging children is criminal i agree. Good luck.
