VERTIGO

Has/does anyone have problems with vertigo? I mean true swirling vertigo! What have/do you do for it? Any diagnosis?

Long story made short, in 2000 I had such horrible bouts of vertigo that I could not leave my house, and by September I became completely bed-ridden. I mean seriously I could not even roll my head off of my left side. My husband had to take a leave of absence from work to care for me full-time. So basiclly I was house and bed-bound for the year, along with feeling like I was literally going crazy. I thought I was going to lose my kids, family and everything, it was horrible! Finally about 2-3 weeks into September I started taking meclizine. It took 6 weeks to pull me out of it. For instance, after about 3 days I could roll my eyes to the right, 3 more days I could roll my head half way over, 3 more days I could move it all the way to the right and on and on until I finally crawled then walked When I first got up I felt like I was in a fun house and had to hold my head to the left or else the whole room was tilted wrong. I had not taken a shower or washed my hair for 6 weeks! My docotor was horrible to me at the time! Anyways, 6 years later and numerous docotors later I am still on meclizine every 4 hours AROUND the clock. And they have no idea what is wrong or what went wrong. The only test I have not done and will not do is an ENG as this means no medicene for 3 days I cannot go through that EVER again. If I miss a dose, I feel like I am on a boat, so I am very good about taking it even through the night. I am not whole anymore.

What do you all think

I actually just studied vertigo in one of my audiology courses. Here are a few tidbits about vertigo:
• Vertigo
 Treatment
• Medication (Antivert or tranquilizers)
• Vestibular Rehabiliation (if the cause of the dizziness is vestibular)
• Surgery – resection of vestibular portion of the 8th nerve (removal of 8th nerve tumor)
o Sense of dizziness with a spinning or rotating sensation
o May be different from general dizziness
o The balance or vestibular system may be affected (when vestibular mechanisms become damaged or diseased a common symptom is vertigo)

I would go to see both an ENT and a neurologist. Vertigo stems from your vestibular system not working well. The vestibular system is connected to the auditory nerve (8th cranial nerve), which is why I recommend an ENT. Besides the 8th cranial nerve there are multiple places in your brain in which our brain pieces together vestibular information., which is why a neurologist will be helpful.
