What causes swollen inflamed lips?

On Saturday, I noticed that a part of my lower lips was getting swollen and there were even a few blisters. I used to get cold sores all the time when I was younger and even had an episode earlier this year which was handled very effectively using abreva. So when I noticed the bump, I immediately put some abreva on it using a q tip. Not sure how or why but I realized that the swelling and yellow crusts spread all over my lower lip which has never happened before. Ever. To make it worse, my upper lip starts getting smaller, harder bumbs(no yellow oozing crusts though). Then they swell up massively, like that Kylie Jenner challenge gone wrong. I slather abreva all day Sunday and Monday, nothing happens. I decide to look for home remedies on Tuesday. I decide to make a paste of baking soda and water and slather all over to get rid of the nasty crust so I can actually get the medicine on my lip. With lots of patience and pain, it works. I gently scrape off most of it but I'm left with reddened, swollen lips. Very uncomfortable. I put on abreva which relieves some of the pain and put some ice on my lips. But the swelling doesn't go down. At all. A few hours have gone by and I just checked and I'm seeing little bumps reforming again on my lower lip. They look yellowy. I'm at a loss. I can't eat. I can hardly speak and feel so bad about it that I can't leave the house. This isn't just one side but all over. I haven't had any changes to my diet. I don't really have any allergies. I did have a root canal but that was 9 days before this started happening. What the heck is wrong with me? I also drank lots of milk and orange juice because of lysine and vitamin c. I have not worn anything on my lips except Carmex for a week prior to the Saturday that it started.
