What could be the cause of spittiing up blood?

Hi. I have been spitting up blood for the last 6 months. Happens all the time in the night . I cant sleep properly anymore because I wake up with the blood taste in my mouth . I have done chest-xray, CT scan . All the results came back normal. I have been to the ENT doctor as well who said there is no more problems with either my nose or my throat. Today I did a bronchoscopy but have been told that there is nothing usual in my lungs. Im 21 . Have been smoking for the past 2 years but gave up since the problem occured. The nurse in the hospital told me to make an appointment with the dentist , as they can't see any other reasons for spitting up blood. I'm really pissed off as for every visit to the GP i have to pay 50 euros and have spent already around 1000 and they still can't find out what the problem is. Never had any problems with my teeth so I think another visit to the dentist would be just a waste of money as I've checked my teeth already 3 months ago and everything was fine. I dont know what else can I do. I've heard a lot of rumours before about bad medicine in Ireland , but now I'm starting to believe in it,because if the doctors can't find what the problem is , who else would? Help with the advice if you please...

Hi
Thanks for keeping me posted!
This is because when you are lying down, the esophageal sphincter relaxes. This makes it easier for food to come up and also for blood. If you lie down at an angle of 45º then you will not face this problem.
Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Thanks very much for your reply . Just another thing that I would like to ask before going to see my physician again . I'm not bleeding when I'm walking or doing any other things on day to day basis, it only happens when my body is in horizontal position . Even if I lay down just for a half an hour I have to spit the blood again always. So im just wondering why is that happening only when Im sleeping or laying down but not when I'm  walking or doing different stuff. Please comment on that if you have any suggestions. Regards.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!

I am glad all lung causes have been ruled out. GERD, severe acidity, or bleeding at the esophageal sphincter can all cause blood in the mouth. If it is frank red blood, then maybe there is a bleeding point at the beginning of food pipe. If it is brownish in color, it could be coming from stomach due to a bleeding ulcer.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. I would strongly recommend you to see a gastroenterologist (a specialist who looks after the diseases of our digestive system). Maybe your physician can recommend someone.
Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
