What does PCR detect?

I did a PCR about a week ago and the doctors told me i had nothing. I'm feeling little pain almost all over my body, i have white patches on my tongue and mouth pain, i have cough and it burns when i pee.

Now i wonder what does a PCR detect, and what can I have? Can it be a cold that gives these health problems?

I've also done 4 blood tests since December 10, 2 HIV tests which resulted both negative.

Hi Jamie,
That is why I said PCR tests for a lot of different things. THey have  a large number of tests they can do with PCR. As stated above they can use a specific piece of DNA or RNA and use that specific sequence to test for variuos bacteria, viruses, and genetic markers etc. There is a process to go through as stated above to clean up the DNA or RNA and then make more of the nucleic acid (amplify). If you have specific symptoms and type of specimen they took I may be able to give you more information as to what they may be testing for. Otherwise, the question is really broad. For example if you have a dry cough, and fatigue with low grade fever and maybe pain in the ribs they may test you with a DNA test for Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Chlamydia pneumoniae. It depends a lot on the symptoms what the doctor will test for. There are so many types of PCR tests or tests that use DNA for dection that just because they did PCR doesn't give one a clue as to which specifc tests or disease they are going after. So, feel free to give symptoms as detailed as possible and how long you have had it etc. and perhaps we can come up with what they are looking for.

The yeast could be from being immunocompromised but not necessarily from HIV, a variety of things can cause this. Have you had a complete blood count as well? You can send that as well ifyou have it.  The urine dip stick test tells somethings and can indicate if there is a urinary tract infection. It only takes a minute to do. They can check for white and red blood cells in the urine, bilirubin, Leukocyte esterase, and nitrates, urobilinogen. The Leukocyte esterase, nitrates and white blood cells can help with telling whether you have a urinary tract infection. The others check the liver and kidneys and blood in urine. I'll look for your results later. Then get back to you.

By the way when i went to the doctor, back in January, he wanted a urine sample, and in a few minutes (i don't know what and how i did that) he told me you have nothing. strange in my opinion, I mean it's nice to know that he could say that so fast, but i still have that burning sensations some days.

Can you tell me what may cause oral yeast ? I wasn't on antibiotics when it started. And yes it's actually like you describet it and if i try to brush it away the it bleeds a little. May it be from cold and stress? I mean it doesn't have to neccessarily be from immune defficencies like aids right ? i hope so even though i got a negative result at 3 months. If it changes anything, my white patches go away when I eat and come back like 1-2 hours later. May it be because of a bad nutrition?

I'll send you a private message later on today with my PCR results and other information.

Thank you very much for your help :)

Hi Jamie,
sorry I took so long to get back to you. I am out of the house but can get my messages. The white patches on the tongue can be yeast or if you were on antibiotics a bacterial overgrowth. You doctor can diagnose that bylooking at the tongue and it looks like cottage cheese and hurts and bleeds if you lightly scrape it with a tongue scraper. As for the burning while urinating it could be a urinary tract infection or STD. Feel free to send your results on this link or to my messages for privacy. I can't guarantee I can come up with what the doctor was looking for but I'll take a look. If the did PCR on a urine with a penial discharge it probably is to check for an STD. Generally, for urinary tract infections they don't spend that much money on PCR and can do a quick "dip Stick" test, microscopic and the a urine culture if necessary.

I have white patches on my tongue, burn when urinating, some pain that at times goes at times comes in the lymphnodes areas especially in the armpits and groin. or at least i think i feel the pain there and also some pain in the chest, nothing more. I've been having these since early december 2011 so for about two months, little more than that. actually at the moment i fell just a little burning while urinating and i have this discomfort in my mouth (white patches and kind of burning).

I asked about the PCR here because there was nothing specific written except for PCR, that's why i didn't know what they looked for there. Sure i have the results so maybe if i give you the results you may tell what they've looked for...

Thank a lot :)

The PCR test I took wasn't specific for HIV like you're suposing. It was just a general PCR. That's why I don't know what they've look for in that test.

HIV tests that detect the genetic material of HIV itself (rather than antibodies or antigens) are known as PCR tests. PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction and is a common way of testing for a variety of different organisms. The overall process of extracting and amplifying the genetic material of an organism (in this case HIV) and then testing for it with a PCR test is called Nucleic-acid Amplification Testing or NAT. NAT tests generally take two forms: DNA PCR tests and RNA PCR tests. For more info regarding hiv and std test visit http://www.curaherbdistributor.com

RNA PCR tests are most frequently used for screening blood donations and donor organs for HIV, while DNA PCR tests are used for testing newborn babies born to HIV positive mothers. Both types of test can be used to measure the amount of virus that is present within a person's body (when they will usually be referred to as 'viral load' tests). NAT is sometimes also offered for diagnosing individuals, but because it is costly and complicated to perform, antibody testing is far more common in testing clinics.

NAT generally gives positive results much sooner than standard antibody testing would, making it useful in situations where early diagnosis is necessary. An RNA PCR test will produce a positive test result within two to three weeks. A DNA PCR test will provide positive results within three to four weeks (sometimes sooner). As long as the recommended amount of time has elapsed before taking the test (people taking the test for personal diagnosis should ask their testing clinic if they are unsure), the test will be able to give a very accurate result. False positive results are more common than false negatives due to the PCR test's sensitivity, so all positive results must be double checked using a standard antibody test.

A "PCR TEST" detects nothing because in reality, there is no such animal. PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction.  This is a duplication protocol. Essentially, this is a method to duplicate insignificant quantities of biological matter many times (exactly) so that it can be present in a quantity that can then be cultured, or examined by other means to provide a differential diagnosis.  Let's say, for eaxmple you need to know about a felon's DNA. The perp  sips on a cup. The saliva on the cup is not enough to be evaluated. The PCR protocol duplicates the material exactly, then dupicates the quantity produced again until you produce a sample sufficient for whatever test you desire to perform. The question is what tests were performed on the sample duplicated by PCR? So once the PCR protocol is used, the question is: "what are they then testing for?".

PCR can detect many things. It is just a way to detect DNA and depends on what they are testing for. There could be a STD still that they didn't test for or it could be a urinary tract infection. The white patches on your tongue with mouth pain suggests yeast. If you are still having symptoms you should go back for more testing.
