What is Mylgia?

My 14 year old son(weight-42kgs,height 5'2) is running 101 F fever for the past 4 days (for which he was given Nimulid to bring down the temperature, 6 doses so far- in 3 days). There is no other secondary infection or complaints. Since yesterday he has developed very severe soreness in his limbs particularly his legs, so much so that he can't even stand  on his own. The doctor said its Mylgia. This is the second time my son is suffering from such a condition, the last one being two years ago, along with a viral fever. His CPK test result is awaited. Malaria and Dengue has been ruled out. ( We are in India.) Right now he has been given Ibuprofen only.
My queries are:
-- Why does it happen?
-- Why only him in the family?
-- Does Nimulid have anything to do with it?
-- Could there be any underlying problem/disorder with him?
-- Any other suggestion or help tip you can offer.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Myalgia or muscle pain is commonly seen with viral fevers. It is more in children than in adults. Nimesulide would not cause it. The various reasons are Dengue, viral flu, lupus, Lyme’s, malaria, polio, electrolyte disturbance (so serum electrolytes should be done), dehydration, and post viral fatigue syndrome. If this settles down once fever goes away and if all these conditions are ruled out (except viral flu) then it should not be a cause of worry.
Give him plenty of fluids--soups, warm lemonade, rice water etc and multivitamin pills.
However, your son’s  pediatrician will know best so consult him. Take care!

Myalgia-merely means MUSCLE PAIN. The 2 times he has been diagnosed with the Myalgia he had been sick with something else and had probably been lying in the bed for a couple of days or had vomiting, diarrhea.  The Nimulid doesn't have any association with the myalgia.  Generally Myalgia is treated with Ibuprofen as his doctor has ordered.  The Ibuprofen not only controls pain but helps with the inflammation as well.  Once he is feeling better and can get up and move around some I'm sure the symptoms will resolve on their own.  Try having him soak in a nice warm bath for awhile and that will help relax the muscles too.  If the pain and other symptoms doesn't improve in a couple of days though. I'd certainly have him visit the doctor again.

Also, there is a chronic condition called Fibromyalgia  that affects both the muscles and the soft tissues of the body.  There is very little treatment for it either, they merely try to control the pain.  Other symptoms include weakness, fatique.  The person has specific trigger areas-(more painful than others)  these areas are only on certain areas of the body so the doctors do some trigger point testing to diagnose this condition.  Your son probably doesn't have Fibromyalgia but may very well later in life because of his history of myalgia.

I hope this helps.  Have A Nice Day!
