ankle and food swelling

by mauibird, Sep 17, 2008 02:31AM
I just turned 40 and since May I've been noticing that my feet and ankles have been swelling.  When I fly the swelling becomes extreme, to the point where my husband is getting worried about this condition being something worse than fluid retention due to gravity.  I've seen two doctors and both have noticed that I've gained 7 lbs in the past 6 months, but I have not changed my diet in anyway.  I have always preferred a low salt diet and I continue to wear a size 4 and stand 5'6" tall.  However, my shoes are tighter and I'm unable to wear any of my rings on my fingers.  I'm currently on prescribed water pills, but all tests (kidney, liver, thyroid, cholesterol and potassium) have come back normal.  I've had multiple massage therapists indicate that my lower extremities are showing fluid retention, and this is before I tell them that something medical appears to be going on with me.  My doctor mentioned that I might be perimenapausal, but he isn't sure yet.  What homeopathic treats and/or vitamins would you recommend since the water pills are not affective?

Hello,

Various possibilities for your symptoms are Gout, ankle arthritis, infection(cellulitis),vascular obstruction like in DVT,varicose veins, eating a poor diet high in salt and carbohydrates , drugs like laxatives, diuretics, birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills, sodium retention, phlebitis, Allergic reactions, neuromuscular disorders and trauma.Liver, kidney and heart disorders are also important causes, some of which have been ruled out in your case.

One thing that is catching my eye is the use of diuretics or water pills.Pls consult your doctor for its usage. Its abuse may cause ankle and feet edema.

Elevate the legs and wear leg wedges to elevate the feet while sleeping. Also use support socks and stocking, proper fitting shoes and socks.Avoid standing in place for long periods of time and sitting with the feet dependent.Limit salt intake and do not abuse diuretics, but a short-term course may be helpful.

Also discuss these possibilities with your doctor.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.
