Nineteen months ago I was diagnosed with smoldering myelomaMultiple myeloma. I was told not to worry unless there were bone lesions which I did not have at the time. My IGA kept going up(still only 1389) and just this past week I had an MRI of my left hipHip joint replacement Hip pain. They found what was told to me a lesion and was sent for more xrays. I had more exrays on Fri. now I have all weekend to wonder what is going on. Does this mean that the myelomaMultiple myeloma is now active? What other reasons could there for bone lesions? What are they? I have had back pain for some time and is getting worse. I have a lot of arthritis. Please help me. I am quite concerned.
Hi K. IGA is a Monoclonal protein that turns up in serumFerritin Serum calcium Serum globulin electrophoresis Serum iron Serum ketones Serum phosphorus Serum progesterone Serum serotonin level Sodium - blood or urineCalcium - urine Calcium urine test Chloride - urine Cortisol - urine Electrolytes - urine Glucose test - urine Hcg in urine Ketones - urine Kidney - blood and urine flow Lh urine test (home test) Ph urine test of about 1% of patients aged 50 years or older and about 3% of those 70 or older. Such a protein may be a manifestation of a serious underlying condition, such as multiple myeloma, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, or systemic amyloidosis. More often, however, it represents a monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). I as I have said I was told I had smoldering myeloma because the numbers were higher than for MGUS but had no lesions. I guess the IGA is normal high around 400 and mine was almost 1300. It still can go a lot higher. I have not had my blood tested for 5 months so don't know what the reading is at the present. I am going to my rheumatologist tomorrow to get a copy of the MRI and xrays to see if I can find out anything. I have an appointment with both the rheumatologist and oncologist for Dec. 12. It just seems like no one wants to say anything. I have no idea if there are other kinds of lesions. Are lesions in fact tumors? I wish I had some kind of information You are so kind to have responded as I feel so alone and am at a very difficult time in my life. It feels good just to talk to someone about it. I am not afraid of the diagnose whichever way it goes it'is the not knowing that is so annoying. Thank you and God Bless. Ciel
Ciel, you can call your dr. for results of your imaging studies. You are entitled to this info. If your films were read as being very worrisome or urgent, you would have been notified to come in sooner, especially if there is a possibility of a malignant lesion. It is standard of practice to do a bone biopsy for a suspicious lesion. Best of luck, and please keep us posted.
