can marijuana and alcohol use cause seizure activity?

21 year old female , after extensive marijuana and alcohol abuse came into Emergency Department having suffered first time seizures. while in dept. seizure presented as erratic movement of rt hand, incontinence of urine ( on one occasion), appearing 'spaced out' for 10 minutes or so, staring blankly and not responding to verbal or physical stimuli.Memory loss and not recognising those close to her. On at least one occasion Oxygen saturation was 88% on room air (up to 97% on 6L O2). CT normal. I cannot find much information on this type of side effect from marijuana and alcohol use. Any ideas?

I am supposed to thank the best response to my question. That's a  bit hard when nobody read my question correctly. It was a serious medical question aimed at those with medical knowledge. None of the answers came from this area. Also, it was immediately judged that I was the person with the problem. there was nothing in the question to suggest this and it couldn't have been further from the truth. despite many challenges in my life, from childhood on, I have never resorted to drugs or alcohol to get me through it. That was my choice. Now, I have to watch as a young relative throws her life away without any really major problems in her life.

the 21 year old female is not me. I work in the emergency dept. the girl is my neice who was brought in. even though I am a nurse it was still scary worrying about what was happening. none of your comments help me in knowing if this was really caused by the combination of excessive use of alcohol and marijuana. One symptom I forgot to mention with the seizures was the lipsmacking.

Hi there----You need help, and you need it fast. Every seizure is a dance with death. If you are alone, there is no one to call 911 or do CPR if you vomit or go into pulmonary/cardiac arrest when you seize. We at the forum cannot tell you how to taper/quit on your own, as coming off alcohol is too dangerous to do at home. what did they tell you at the ER about followup care? You need to see a doctor TOMORROW, honey. Please let us know what's going on with you, as we are here to help you with lots of emotional support and tips for being more comfortable physically while you are detoxing---but again, SEE A DOCTOR TOMORROW!

I would think (and hope) that after having that experience it would be enough to make you realize this needs to end.  Alcohol use (or withdrawal) can cause seizures.  And even though marijuana may not typically cause seizures, everyone is different.  We are all wired differently and even though one person may be fine when using something, another person can have a totally different experience.  People can wind up having seizures, heart attacks, strokes, etc.

I'm not sure what your history is, but however you got to where you are now, you need to make changes and put it all away.  If you can do a detox, that would be your best route, given what happened in the ER.
