recently I have found bruises in unusual spots without any recollection of hitting or bumping myself there what could be the cause?

Unless the site of the bruises is in a place where you simply cannot possibly have bumped yourself, you probably have bumped yourself there, perhaps while asleep or highly distracted doing something.

But... if you are bruising more readily, frequently, or the bruises do not resolve as you have seen bruising previously resolve, then see a doctor about it.
