You never know if it will be a deadly seizure until it is. My husband has been taking Xanax for years. Recently he has tried to quit but the doctors keep Giving him more. They kept postponing taking him off. Last week he didn't take any Xanax for two days, this is not the first time he went a few days without. I woke up to him shaking in bed and grunting. I called 911 and he snaped out but he was still out of it. He came running towards me and I was frightened. Next thing I know he was knocking on the frigde n stove n opening n closing doors. When he ran at me I open the front door n her locked me out. I had a tsirt n panties on when the cops showed up. The doc said it was a seizure from benzo withdrawal. I wouldn't risk it go through treatment to get off. You never know when a seizure might hit or if it is going to be deadly!

any seizure lasting more then five minutes should go to a hospital.  xannax can contribute to him having seizures from stopping the med.  If another occurs and you are with him roll him on his side to avoid choking on his tongue or obstructing the airway.  this will keep airway open especially if he vomits so he does not choke if last more than 5 min call an ambulance he should go back to doc as soon as possible.  Maybe doc will give med along with new one to prevent the seizures good luck.

I think zanax is a benzo anyway isnt it? Seizures are quite common if you come off benzos too quick! What sort of benzo did he get changed too? Chris

Xanax (G)=Alprazolam is the fastest acting but the shortest
lived benzodiazepine. Many overdose becuase it's affect is gone in abt 4 hrs. I've used 1mg 4xday & then 0 next day. Anything
exceeding 10mg a day w/ Xanax is abuse & leads to pill-popping
& then sudden seizures can occur. Older you are the less is to
be used. Benzo's are excellent as a smooth muscle relaxant & not
just for stress/anxiety. It will open severe blocked sinuses
w/ allergies also. Sadly, benzo's are mixed w/ other drugs to make meth labs. Now Dr's are afraid to prescibe it. Blood tests
should be done soon on him so they can ck dose he's taking.
Sorry, but if he was 'out' & not really looking like a seizure,
he may have abused dosage & passed out.

Apologies I missed the 5 minute period of seizure. My son has gran mal epilepsy and I would be very concerned if he was out for 5 minutes.  I certainly would agree that your brother goes to the hospital to get checked out. That is a long time to be out even during gran mals.

My mother has been taking xanax for panic disorder for many years now.  She recently suffered a heart attack,  and while she was in the hospital,  her psychiatrist called her cardiologist and told him to make sure she gets her xanax,  because if you take it for as many years as she has,  stopping it abruptly can cause seizures.  So,  I would say that is definately why your brother had a seizure.  I think he should definately make an appointment with a doctor & go in & discuss this to make sure that it isn't dangerous,  or what,  if anything,  they need to do about it.

As long as he's coherent, he is probably okay.  That is, if he's had grand mals before.  If this is the first, he needs to go to the hospital.  If he's had them before and doesn't start to seize again, then just resting is the best thing for him to do.  Just make sure someone stays with him.
