elevated alkaline phosphate level -am worried

Hi all
I am a 23 year old girl and have a raised alkaline phosphate level of 167. I am constantly tired and am really worried that there might be something seriously wrong. My doctor has told me not to worry too much but I can't help it. At the moment the doctors have no clue why this is raised.
Any ideas?
Thanks u

hi keeping you all up to date, had a phone call yesterday off the hospital, they want to do more blood tests, a liver, renal and bone blood test. i understand the liver and bone but why renal, also i was told the problem was my 2 year old daughters liver and not bone as i was led to believe. i also have been told that her alk phos level in her liver was really high but it was secondary to a viral infection. does this sound right to anyone?

Make sure they test you for hepatitis A, B and C.
If you haven't been vaccinated against Hep A and B yet, get vaccinated. The test for hep a b and c is a simple blood test. Raised liver function tests should be followed with a hep test. Also, I'd stop drinking alcohol until you get to the bottom of this.

Hi All,
we spoke to the dr today and she is now down to 790.He then went into a massive apology for getting us worried but i can tell you we were more than happy to be told this. They are still going to keep an eye on her as he said its still high but looks like its going to drop.

The last few days have been an absolute worry for us,but today we are now at ease.obviously something pushed it way up which they tend to investigate, but the sweat is now off.

I don't think she's been hugged so much in 1 weekend, lol. Thanks to everyone for helping us through the weekend,we will be hanging around still to finally give you their findings. This is a pickler, but glad its not serious:o)

hi just wondered if anyone can help, my 2 year old has a high alk phos, it was 4000, 5 days later it was 2000 hospital says points to virus repeat test 2 weeks later, we are now awaiting results, however gp rang really concerned and says the results mean she is really sick but to look at her she is fine. last liver test was normal all other tests normal apart from abnormality in her kidney which is a seperate thing. hes going to ring hospital tommorow but just a bit concerened as to whether they will go by results or by what she looks like, plus there is 2 different stories hospital says its a virus and our doc says shes sick what do i do next?

jezzamagic.co.uk -- Ignore the two posts above ! = ) I am sorry to hear about your daughter. I can only tell you that it is a good sign that she looks healthy and that her levels are going down. I can also tell you that there are some viruses that can significantly affect someones lab results. Whatever you choose to do, I would check out the link that I posted above and make sure your child's physicians' rule out all possibilities and monitor her labs closely.

lja401 -- Consider checking out that link again and make sure that everything is ruled out and definitely address all of your concerns with your physician.

thank you for taking your time to reply to me.

It's horrible, it is really getting me down. I am going to make an appointment next week and ask to see a specialist because in the UK it can take months to see one so the sooner I ask to see one the better.

I did take the pill for about 6 years so I wonder if this has effected my liver. My calcium came back as normal so I presume it's not the bones that are causing the elevated alkaline phos levels.

Do you know if I should be asking for anymore tests?

Thank u :o)

I would try not to worry too much. My intention for giving you the link was so that you could make sure your physician is doing everything he/she is supposed to do.

I can tell you that there are some people, for whatever reason, who repeatedly have an abnormal lab(s) with no diagnosis and many times, no symptoms. I hope this is the case here. It is good that your physician has ordered a phosphorus & calcium levels to be drawn and I hope you have your answer soon.

thank you. Im sorry I didn't mean to sound ungrateful. I am just so worried at the moment because the doctors have no idea what it is and im scaring myself by reading into things. They have said it's very unusual for a girl my age to have these levels and that is worrying me.It's been going on for 6 weeks now and I just wish it could be sorted out sooner. :o(

I understand how you feel and I know what it is like to have abnormal labs and no diagnosis. What helped me was taking one day at a time and trying not to worry too much. (easier said than done sometimes!) = )

thank you for taking your time to find that for me. I am really worried after reading that though, here are some more details:

i have had an elevated alkaline phospatase (167) when tested about 6 weeks ago. I was tested again 2 weeks later and it rose again to 185 and then went down to 167. my physician has since ordered calcium and phosphorus blood levels, parathyroid hormone levels... no results from those tests are back yet.. ..what are the implications of elevated ALP only, all other liver enzymes are fine... my only c/o is mild fatigue and I tend to pick up a lot of colds..i do not drink any "hard" liquor, drink 3 glasses of wine maybe once a week....

any ideas? x
