firm lump on side under rib

My husband has a lump on his right side below his last rib. It has been there for years.  I can see it when he stretches. It feels like some kind of cyst. Its deeper than skin but large enought to see if the skin in stretched over it. I noticed it about a year ago and asked him about it. He said it didn't hurt and it has been there forever. Well now, a year later it has started to hurt. He says it hurts on the inside like it is causing pain and pressure to something else. Its a little over one inch in length and definatly seems to be rounded. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be so I can research. He needs to go to the doctor> I KNOW! But every time he goes to the doctor for something they run a bunch a test, charge him a couple $1000, and tell him they dont know. He hasnt been for this before. I dont know if I can get him to go.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!

A swelling that has been there for so long can be a neurofibroma, a lipoma or a lymphnode. All these swellings are harmless. However if they increase in size or cause pain, bleed or show a discoloration, they should immediately be investigated.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
