help with numbness in my legs, diagnosed as idiopathic lumbosacral plexopathy...

by ckerr, Aug 23, 2009 10:50AM
A few years ago I had a pain behind my right thigh which progressed into numbness or strange sensation of the skin at that area and also on the right hand side of my foot. After being referred to the hospital and getting a lumbar puncture to test for MS and other things, I was told that there didn't seem to be anything wrong and to contact if anything else progressed. over a 5 year period I had some discomfort in that area if for instance standing for long periods of time, which made me feel like I had to stretch my hamstring, or caused a kind of burning sensation on the skin. The "numbness" started to spread over a wider area on my leg and the patch at the back of my leg that is affected is now 4 inches wide as opposed to the 1inch wide that I started with, and has also lengthened to now reach thye top of my thigh and my bum cheek. When I contacted my doctor I was called back in to go for an MRI of my back, but that came back clear. I've also had an EMG which came back as having a slight lack of repsonse from the tendans but nothig to worry about. I have done many things to try and see if I can cure it myself as I was told that it was developmental and there was nothing I could do to make it any better and nothing I was doing was making it any worse, but I don't want to just sit back and accept that is all I can do. I have been to an accupuncture specialist, osteopathy, chiropractor, sports massage and had also joined a gym to see if exercise would help as I don't do much exercise other than what I get with my job and occasional wander round a park.  I am not overweight, and my diet isn't the best but isn't the worst either, I don't drink much but I sit and play on my xbox quite alot, as do I sit in work for short periods of time at awkward angles on a hard seat. I have always thought that the constant numbness I get could have been cause by sitting so much and the angle I sit at work combined with the fact the seat is so hard potentially stops some blood getting to my legs, but I have been told that this is not the case. I have been told that the only kind of treatment they can offer if it gets any worse is a course of steriods and small blood tranfusions but as you can imagine I don't really want to start taking steriods as there is no guarantee it will help at all and I would still get unpleasant side effects.
I would be very very interested to hear if anyone has similar symptoms or knows someone in the same situation as me and would greatly appreciate some feedback as I am told that this is a rare thing that they don't know much about.

thank you for taking the time to read this :-)
