help

My 15 year old son is having chest pain with nausea and dizziness. He is an asthmatic. At times his heart slows way down . He is not overweight. He is at 120 lbs. Dr took x-rays and blood work. Said his cholesterol is high and he needs to go to  dietitian. He has bad heartburn so the dr increased his prilosec. He is supposed to go to a specialist, but the appointment isn't until the 26th of Jan. I am worried. Any ideas? Thanks-pwrath

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!

Chest pain with dizziness and nausea can be due to pulmonary embolism. This can be diagnosed by a chest CT. Can this be arranged before the specialist’s visit? Other cause can be increased pulmonary artery pressure.

Dizziness could also be due to postural hypotension (blood pressure falling with change of position), internal ear problems and cervical spondylitis. All these cause dizziness when you get up from lying down position. Cervical spondylitis and ear problems also cause dizziness and nausea on changing the position of the neck.

Other causes are anemia, GERD (in your son’s case this is there), hypoglycemia or low sugar and some endocrine problems. Some types of seizures too behave in this way.

Your son needs a comprehensive investigation taking all these points in consideration.  Please discuss this with your doctor and get him investigated accordingly. If the problem persists please consult your doctor earlier or go to ER. Do keep me posted. Take care!
