high fever, high white blood cell count, 2 year old

My 2 year old nephew is in the hospital - doctors have yet to diagnose the problem. He has been running a high fever since Monday (104.8 at that time), and is not eating/drinking, so has been put on IVS. He's down to 17lbs (from 24 - he was a little early). After the gamut of tests had been run, the doctors still don't know what's going on, and are talking about a possible spinal tap (assume to rule out menningitis (meningitis)). Any other suggestions?
