influenza?

I've had a horrible cough for a week now. Usually nothing comes up and my throat hurts like crazy. when i cough i do get a clear thick mucus, along with a little brownish color stuff. It sometimes makes it hard to breath, like it is blocking my airway. I get a headache so bad that it makes me dizzy. I have been drinking hot tea, and water like crazy. It never seems to wet my throat. at times it seems so dry and hard to swallow. my ears were plugged, but now i can atleast pop them, but it really feels like liquid is in my ears. I have been sleeping with a cool humidifier, and that doesnt seem to help. my girlfriend went to the doctor and she was told influenza. But some of out symtoms arent the same.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A PCP needs to examine and see whether you have swollen tonsils, redness at the back of the throat, post nasal drip etc. An X-ray will need to be done to rule out chest infection. Then you will need an ENT referral. Pharyngitis, tonsillitis or basically an upper respiratory infection can be due to several pathogens. Meanwhile you can take an OTC anti-inflammatory and decongestants and do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day. Drinking warm lemonade, hot clear soups and herbal tea may soothe the throat considerably. Do a valsalva maneuver (Done by taking a deep breath and blowing while pinching your nostrils and closing your mouth) to relieve pressure from internal ear and blocked Eustachian tube (tube connecting ear to throat). Relieving this pressure may relieve some symptoms. I would strongly recommend you to consult an ENT specialist. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.  Take care!
