I've been unlucky enough to have had kidney stones twice...once about 5 years ago, and once again a few months back. The first time the pain was so severe in my back that it took my breathe away. My Dr. prescribed Vicodin and sent me home to imediately take 2, and to drink as much water as possible. He said the water would help flush the stones. Within a few hours, the stone passed, they gave me a strainer-type thing to catch the stone. The second time around, the pain was immediately recognizable, so I immediately started drinking water by the gallon. The pain subsided later in the evening, but seemed to move through my abdomen for an entire week, until I was peeing nothing but blood. GYN put me on antibiotics assuming it was a UTI, and that evening, I passed what I like to call the Rock of Gibralter! They say caffeine is bad for people with Kidney Stones, and drinking plenty of water is most important, all the time.
Sorry you're going through this, hope it passes soon.
I am always getting kidney stones. The first ones that I got was in 2004. Went to er after I had been on antibiotics for 4 days and wasnt getting any better. My doc thought that it was a uti. I had blood in my urnine. When I got to er the triage nurse thought right away it was a stone. Had a cat scan done and I had a 5mm and a 2mm sone in right kidney. They gave me pain meds and said it could be a few days or even a few months to pass. I went back to my doctor and told them what was going on and they sent me to a urologist. The urologist said a 5mm was cutting it close for passing on its own, so i had a lithrotrypsy. Thats sucked. It got rid of the stones and a couple months later had a 2mm in my right kidney again, I chose to try and let it pass. It was a while before it did. I ended up in the er again with pain and nausea. The stone was in my uterer, on its way out, and they also seen 3 more in my left kidney and another in my right. Had another lithrotrypsy and they didnt get it all. As of today I have 3mm still in right kidney and I am waiting for it to pass. Not really any pain or nausea right now. I know it is still there because my doctor did a urine sample and I still had blood in urine. Where was your stone? How big is it? Did they refer you to a urologist?
