Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
No, it is not normal. This prolonged cycle and heavy bleeding can be due to polycystic ovary, hormonal imbalance, hypothyroidism or adrenal gland problems.
Please consult a gynecologist to find the exact cause through tests like serum hormone levels, ultrasound etc. Take care!

I am 26 years old and have a period maybe once a year. Chances are there could be a problem but not all of them are serious. Once I went 3 years without one and I got pregnant during the your weight can change your cycles, and there are some other things like endometriosis (when the tissue cells that line the inside of your uterus decide to line the outer side or other parts), PCOS (when cysts grow in your uterus)... There are a lot of things actually. I tried for so long to figure out what is wrong with me but nothing can be found. Sometimes when I do have my period it can last a month or two.

Kimberleigh is right you should go to OB/GYN and get checked. You could have fertility problems and the quicker you get it checked the quicker you will find out what is normal for you. If there is nothing wrong then getting on birth control will not only help with your bleeding but will regulate you and allow you to plan around your period easier. Good luck to you.

I would think that anytime you skip one or more months of getting a period, there is something not functioning properly but it could be so many different things that I can't begin to limit them to what you may be going through.  At your age though (out of your teenage years), you should be getting normal cycles.

Do you get a yearly PAP smear at an OB/GYN or nurse practioner of one?  If not, this is definitely one reason to go to an OB/GYN to get this checked out.  If your cycles aren't functioning properly and one day you'd like to get pregnant, this is something to get figured out sooner than later.  You are still young and have time to have children but for your own health, I'd go to a doctor about this.  I have very regular periods and it still took us over 3 years to conceive a child and we had to use fertility drugs and procedures so it's worth you getting to the doctor on something like this, even if you don't want to have children someday.  Take care!
