migraines caused by nerve in neck--left side

by lkramer, Jan 20, 2009 12:21AM
Since 40 I've always gotten migraine-type headaches --lower left back side of head--feeling pain down to neck.  This last month I've gotten awakened  by that same pain (scale 1--10 --an 8 or 9) every night after only 2 or 3 hours sleep. Sitting up in reclyer helps take some pressure away (7).  Tylonal/ibu--no help.  I've kept records; the pain lasts for about 12 hours, pressure/pain is better (5) if i walk around.  I've tried ice, heat, meditation, etc.  no help.  I've tried no pillow, some pillow.  I'm tired!!

Hello,

Despite medical advances, migraines can be difficult to treat. Migraines can be treated with 2 approaches: abortive and preventive.
Abortive treatment includes triptans(sumitriptan, naratriptan etc.), Ergotamine tartrate (Cafergot), Dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45 Injection, Migranal Nasal Spray) and narcotics(butalbital, Acetaminophen and codeine).

Preventive treatment includes medications used to treat high blood pressure(Beta-blockers(propranol),calcium channel blockers (verapamil), Antidepressants(Amitriptyline ,nortriptyline,Antiseizure medications(Gabapentin , valproic acid, topiramate and some antihistamines and anti-allergy drugs, including diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and cyproheptadine.Sometimes combinations of medicines are used. Botox toxin has also found to help in migraine.

My advice would be to consult a physician and start with specific antimigraine therapy.

Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.
