Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
I am sorry to hear about your friend’s son. Basically he has a demyelinating disease of the brain. Commonest cause is multiple sclerosis. However since you say it is a big name, it could be Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), or Central pontine myelinolysis. It is really difficult to say what it was. Maybe one of this will sound familiar to you.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

I know cerebral palsey can affect muscle function.  Maybe you could look that up and see if that's it?
