neck pain

I am a 51 year old female of average weight and height. For approximately the past month, I have had a soreness at the base of my neck just a little to the left of the top of my spine. I'm not sure if it is a neck problem or upper back problem. I have no history of arthritis, back problems, or any recent injury to that area. It seemed to start as a slight burning sensation, and now is just a nonspecific soreness. Interestingly, when I lay down, it goes away. Otherwise, it is there almost constantly. Any direction at all would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

When you feel your neck, the "big bump" at the shoulders is called C-7, or the 7th bone in the neck. If this is where your problem is, several things may help.  Since the pain is eased by laying down, I think you are just not moving the neck enough.  Try some exercises that will relax the neck and back.  don't hold the head in the same position too  long. Sewing, knitting, watching tv or computer, reading, etc. are activities that you do without moving the neck around too much.  Take breaks and roll the neck and relax the shoulders. Check your posture to make sure you are sitting up straight and not slumping forward slightly pulling the vertebra in the neck slightly forward, which can cause maladjustment and stretch the muscles giving pain and soreness. You may want to see a Chiropractor and get an adjustment to relieve the tension in the neck. Cool neck compresses may help as well.  Good luck
