ovary growing back

In Dec 05 I went int surgery to have my right ovary removed due to polycystic ovary. In Jan 07 the doctor tells me that my ovary has grown back. Since the surgery in December 05 I have been in excruciating pain on  my right side where he "removed" my ovary. I had went for ultrasounds before but the tech never checked the right side b/c i always told them i had no right ovary.  This time when i went for an ultrasound because i am still hurting after a year on that right side, I did not tell her I had my ovary "removed".  She said my right ovary was "Normal" and my left ovary had 2 cyst on it. Just to confirm what she said my doctor said the same thing and told me "IT GREW BACK". Please tell me how in the world can an ovary grow back!!!!!!!!!

..working on some research on an ovary growing back..first of all ...that is amazing i too live in Ohio. I had a partial histo removing my uterus and right ovary in 2002. In 2004 I had to remove my left ovary due to the same reasons as the right ovary.

It is now 2009 and I started having some extreme pain in my left lower side of my pelvic area. I went to the ER because of the sudden pain and they took a CT Scan. Telling me I am fine. I just have a cyst on my Left Ovary and need to follow up with an OBGYN. If you could see me face numb and staring blank at the doctor. I raised my hand and said.."oh no..there has to be a mistake...I had a complete surgical procedure to have this left ovary removed. It was a 5 hour operation and I was off work for 6 weeks. I DO NOT have an ovary..has to be something else?" The doctor shook his head and said that is what CT Shows......

I searched on a good doctor..made an appointment - however it was two months away...in turn..had to revisit the ER again. Another CT Scan was taken again..Ovary;cyst; now is filling up with blood..goto OBGYN...still pain severe....two weeks later back at the ER. I am still telling the doctors I am worried..I had this removed. A good Doctor came in and said.."we will finish this..lets go in by ultrasound and look at it.." Results: Healthy ovary; cyst w/ fluid; tied up in adhesions.

Went to my OBGYN appointment with all my results..he said.."well, looks like an healthy ovary...just need to let that cyst have time to go away.  (I am thinking in my head why he is saying this...uhhh. what the ? oh my gosh..there is no way..why is this all about reports on paper ...why isn't any doctor giving my an explaination as to why this is in my body..could this be a medical mistake?) then the doctor goes on ...he says ..you should expect these cyst every month..here is some pain pills to help..however they usually dont give you relief..

I am so fed up by this point...I imediately called  my surgern from 2004 and asked to have the surgical report and pathology report sent to me. ( the pathology report is a second medical confirmation that the organ has been removed) I received it the next day. I went back to the doctor the next week. "HERE! i said. Here is proof. That OVARY had BEEN removed!)...he looked a little shakin then said..well you just have adhesion desease and there is NOTHING I can do for you. I WILL NOT do surgery. I have to refer you to the cleveland clinic for pain management..you will needs this is you will have this pain for the rest of your life.  grrr!

So with three aganizing painful months later..I finally seen the Pain Clinic..The doctor was very concerned. He was mad that I was not sent to a GI (to have the bowels checked) a URI ( to check my urine..because the traces of blood) and then he advised me over to a SPECIALIST at the University Hospital who does adhesion removal.

Finally goto the adhesion removal OBGYN Surgen he reviewed all my medical records and the ultrasound of the ovary on a live CD. He said that I do have a left ovary. I have a mass of scar tissue; it had damaged my ureter and may have to remove part of the bowel and intestine. We scheduled the surgery. A MONTH LATER...

Again it has now been over five months!  I have been on high moriphine drug for four weeks...finally got to the surgery and hour away from my home. He removed a full ovary: Adhesions; and had to completly scrap my ureter back to life. All  of this by a FIVE hour Laproscopy.

By the way five hours Laproscopy is the worst recovery you can imagine. there is no way to control the gas pain that is left over to seep out of your skin...you can only wait and squirm in pain for days until the gas is released. For me I had to suffer all my organs being disturbed by them moving the organs all around to make sure the bowels and intestines are not damaged. therefore  I move and my insides feel like jello and they are not relaxed and layed like they are used to.

Wow what a ride...Something is not right..Ovary growing back?? If this was normal..why wouldn't the five to six doctors tell me that this is possible...in turn..i was treated as a freak who keeps running back to the ER. Not considering the fact my OBGYN and Pain Management office's were over an hour away...i was taking moraphine..i can not just drive out there when i get a chance...I had permission to goto the er when things were rough...the ER Finally gave up on me and refused me treatment..YES this is true..saying they could do nothing for me..and sent me home with out! a DR. Seeing. me.

I am still working on the complaint with the hosptial as we speak...

So....I do believe something is going on...the only question I have..is when you are a doctor and you take that ultra sound of the ovary. you get the 3x3x3 demisions of the ovary. When you remove it...shouldn't you make sure the correct deminsions are removed..before you confirm that it has been removed...incase this mistery of OVARY GROWTH...is an issue us women are having to face and have repeat surgerys for!

Just today I learned that my cystic left ovary along with a 1.4cm cyst has grown back, 10 months after the overy and 8 cm mass of cysts were surgically removed.  In April 06, I had 4 grapefruit-sized masses removed (two were pure fluid).

My cysts were very painful and kept growing for 5 years until the fluid masses showed up.  At that point, drs. thought I might have cancer, so my ins. ok'd surgery.  Fortunately, no cancer was found.

Should I push to have the ovary removed again?  I was told that I definitely had PCOS just prior to the ovaries being removed, but that I would not need treatment for PCOS, since the surgery would stop the problems (it didn't.)

I was also diagnosed with diabetes a month before my ovarian cysts surgery, and have been taking Metformin since June 06.  My blood sugar has not stabilized at all yet, and now I guess I know the PCOS is probably why.  I have gained 8 pounds since the surgery and starting Metformin (but was told I should lose 10-15 lbs.)

So, now I need to get my endocrinologist and gyno talking about treating PCOS, right?

By the way, my sister in law just told me that a "miracle" regrowth of ovaries happened at her last church to a woman who kept praying to get pregnant and had to have her ovaries removed.  The ovaries grew back, and she gave birth to normal baby.

So, I guess it can and does happen, at least here in Ohio.

To clarify something, each time i went for an ultrasound they checked the groin area not the area of the ovaries.  Mind you everyone was thinking I had no right ovary so they were never looking for one to be there in the first place.  The only way this was discoved was i never mentioned to this tech. about any previous surgeries. I just let her find what she finds. The surgery was to require the whole right ovary removed along with a right andexal cyst.
Still i have never heard of anything growing back once it has been removed.  I will take the advice about having an MRI done to make sure it is not an ovary. Thank you all for your input. Please keep responding

hey i am leaving proof that a ovary can grow back---my left ovary kept getting cyste and i had to have it removed (both) and with in a short amount of time I realized my hormones I did not need and I was feeling something on my left side.....I went back to the doctor and WOW I had a full functioning left ovary that was giving me the hormones I needed but I was hurting..needless to say I had to have it removed AGAIN.  I talked to my doctor about it on How this could happen?  He told me that when they were removed a small piece the size of a needle point could have been left and the hormones I was taking fed it and it grew back...Strange huh?

Boogie,  your story is so intriguing.  I had heard that if an ovary wasn't all the way removed,  that if only some of it was removed,  it could in very rare cases grow back.

Has all of this,  the ovary removal,  the ultrasounds for pain,  and the discovery of the "grown back" ovary all been performed at the same office?  I think you need to switch doctors if that's the case.

First,  you have an ovary removed,  and complain of horrible pain,  so they do an ultrasound but do NOT check the area you are in pain and just had surgery on.  It's not like its any more effort to just move the wand over that way - it wouldn't cause any difficulty at all to just look there while you're doing an ultrasound right there anyway.

Your story is kind of baffling on many levels.  Best wishes.

WOW! I KNOW TONSILLS CAN GROW BACK, BUT AN OVARY? I WOULD SUGGEST AN MRI INSTEAD OF AN ULTRASOUND. AN ULTRASOUND MAY BE SHOWING SCAR TISSUE, OR SOME OTHER GROWTH, THAT LOOKS LIKE AN OVARY. aN MRI WOULD SHOW IT IN MORE DETAIL. OTHER THAN THAT ONLY ANOTHER SURGERY COULD REALLY TELL.
