ovary pain and upper abdomen pain

by erzsi, Oct 11, 2006 12:00AM
a few weeks ago i had an ovarian cyst rupture and since then my stomach hurts in the area where my ovaries are and i have also recently (in the past few days) been having sharp pain in my upper right abdomen under my ribs.  also, every once in awhile my head feels shaky or light, i cant really describe it but for a moment it will feel like there is nothing in my head. the head feeling started the same day as my pain in my upper right rib area.  could any of this be related to the ovarian cyst rupture?

Did they do an ultrasound?  Did they tell you how much fluid it released?

I had one break last year that released a liter of fluid and blood into my abdomen and I had pains just like you did for weeks (and a fever, nausea, and cramping).  I seriously though I was going to die for a few days and the pain, etc. lasted for over a month.

The ER doc recommended a heating pad on my abdomen at night - it helped me.

Do you have a good OB/GYN you can follow up with?

I had *NO* symptoms prior to the cyst rupturing - I didn't even know I had this huge monster inside of me.  I did feel a bit of pressure and uncomfortableness but I have IBS so that was nothing new.  When it ruptured though - boy did I know it!  Searing pain that doubled me over, huge nausea, shakes and chills, couldn't stand up.

They didn't tell me how big the cyst had been (the one that ruptured) just that I had about a liter of fluid/blood released from it (it must have been huge).

The one I had removed earlier this year (and my ovary with it) fully encompassed my ovary and was about as large as my fist.  It was also completely full of blood.  Two smaller cysts (about 2" across) were fluid filled.

Two months before I had it removed my ultrasound showed *NO* cysts - they would come and go around ovulation time.  All these OB/GYNs that I talked to said most women's cysts will resolve on their own - maybe yours is like that.  Unfortunately, mine wasn't.

There are medications your doctors can try you on to prevent ovulation and perhaps reduce the cysts.  If you are trying to get pregnant, talk to a doctor - removing the cyst could damage your ovary and the medication (usually birth control pills but sometimes shots) will prevent pregnancy.  Talk to a good Ob/Gyn

Ha Ha. sorry but the bit about trying for a baby(i wish). I am 47 and had womb removed at 25 stopped ovualting(or so i thought ) about 2-3 years ago. Thanks for the rupture symptoms though. They are useful so that if it does happen i will know when it does. Many thanks.
