pain at shoulder blade with nerve issues

by fullhouse451, Jun 09, 2006 12:00AM
I have soreness in my left back shoulder blade with nerve like funny bone pain/tingling shooting down my arm from time to time.  I have had xrays and an MRI of my neck and spine and those are all pretty much normal.  I do have full range of motion in my shoulder, however the nerve pain will become worse if a reach for something or use that arm in any way that taxes teh back shoulder blade.  If anyone pushes or massages that muscle that runs on the edge of my shoulder blade my arm will start tingling immediatly.  After my MRI due to lying on my back my shoulder blade and that muscle swelled up considerably.

Try seeing a physical therapist.  It sounds like you may have some minor musculskeletal problem that x-rays or MRI can't detect.  I am a therapist and see stuff like this frequently.  It may even be something people call T4 syndrome.  Lots ofthings can refer pain to hyou shoulder blade and arm.  The neck, thoracic spine, shoulder, and even soft tissue problems like "trigger points".

I have been doing therapy with a chiropractor since march and just started PT with a PT therapist last week.  This chronic pain and nerve thing is just getting to me, mood wise.  Thanks,

I had a right thoracotomy performed Dec. 4th to remove a bronchogenic cyst on my lung.  Even though it was a major surgery (11 days in the hospital), I seemd to be healing well.  On Dec. 22nd, I was reclined with pillows behind my back/head in the bed.  I place both fists down into the mattress on either side of my body to lift myself up and over.  I felt a pop underneath my right armpit and my ability to take a full breath on the right side felt very constricted. Over the course of the next few hrs/days, the pain radiated around to mid sternum and behind my right shoulder blade.  My right breast and nipple are hypersensitive, as well as the skin where the "pop" was and underneath my breath.  It feels like a large ball or a foreign object behind my shoulder blade and I can't find a comfortable position.  The hydrocodone are doing basically nothing at this point. I am also taking Toradol....no relief.  My cardiothoracic doctor ordered an x-ray which ruled out any rib fracture, etc. and he also ordered a CT/no contrast which just showed post-operative fluid under the right lung.  I go back to see him Jan. 2 and I am hoping we can order an MRI....and I am praying this would show any muscle tears or fascia tears, etc.  The pain is just too much to bear.  Please help!
