pain on top left side

for a few years i have been having pain in my left side right under the bottom of my rib. it doesnt happen all the time but when it does it hurts so bad it makes me sweat. when i drink water it seems to help the pain especially when i belch a few times could this be gas hurting this bad? i also get bloated in the top of my stomach during this time

i went to the doctor and they said it was ibs but i was wondering should the pain be so bad when it flares up. thanks for the comments and yes i have had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago. i was having these problems then also

Your gallbladder is on the right. Although you can get referred pain from gallbladder attacks, a hiatal hernia is a more likely cause. The first choic for any type of abdominal pain is usually ultrasound. After that a Barium Swallow Upper GI series is your next likely step.
