painful edema

I am a married mom of 3 boys, 40 years old and overweight although quite active until about 3-4 weeks ago, i suffer from severe depression and have been hit with a real good bout of it, probably the worst i have ever had...so i have not been as active, my sleep schedule is messed up,all due to the depression, well i have also been on the computer ALOT lately, too much in fact, so my question is, i have been experiencing some edema from the calves down, it has become quite bothersome and is actually difficult to lift my legs as they feel so heavy, the swelling has gotton to the point that i have resorted to wearing my husbands flip-flops, and the tops of my feet actually feel bruised, i went to the doctors and was prescribed a 10 day supply of feurosimide which did absolutly nothing, i do not eat alot of salt, i do all of my own cooking so i am aware of what we are eating (no mystery meats etc...)  could someone please help me figure out what this may be, i know an actual diagnoses is impossible, but just some hint to what it MAY be so i can do some research before my next doctors appointment, i dont even know where to start, my breathing is fine, i have been a little more tired than usual but that could be depression, i have a dry mouth also..i have also gained a substantial amount of weight in a short time frame ..44lbs since end of may, but 14 of those  lbs has been gained in the past 17 days....help...any input would be greatly appreciated...

Did the Doctor have a diagnosis? I have had teh same problem, and I'm trying to figure what it may be. I have weight ~130 lbs and I am VERY active my whole life. I have a Thyroid disorder which I take Synthroid for - but I just put on 15 lbs and my legs swell so much they're painful to teh touch...

Hi, I am not a doctor but have been doing some research on the computer about my brother-in-law.

Why don't you go to www.kidney.org and check that out.  I read on the computer that swelling could be caused from a kidney disorder.

Also, are you on med's for depression?  If you could you should probably start walking a bit everyday after you get a doctor's ok of course.

I hope everything turns out ok...
