permanent sciatic nerve damage

Had surgery for herniated l4&l5 s1 in sept 09..also had pinched sciatic nerve andstarted having severe back and leg,ankle and foot pain with swellingin foot and ankle with 5 different sensations none good.Had mri in april of 2010 and it showed permenate damage to the sciatic nerve in the l47l5 region with disc disease and spine stenosis..Have been on pain management for 8 months,taking percocet 4x daily..my question is what can be done for the sciatic nerve since this has been diagnosed as permanent..My friend feels strongly for accupuncture .What do you think?
