pituitary "lesions"

by jab3698, Jul 03, 2009 12:55PM
I was taking decadron for a suppression test.  I did suppress.  However,  a 24 hour urine cortisol was elevated as was the corticosteroid test.  An MRI showed two hyper intense areas in the anterior portion; one just to the right of center and one to the left. The MRI report stated they could be a cyst or a micro adeoma. The report also stated I have inflammation near the left mastoid.    My endocrinologist does not think the pituitary "lesions" are of significance.  I have not even thought about the mastoid problem and don't know where to start. Serum cortisol was normal as was DHEA.  The blood tests also revealed elevated RDW and low iron saturation.  I should add I have inherited thrombophilia and am on blood thinners after two bouts of DVTS and pulmonary emboli.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
A pituitary microadenoma is a benign growth in the pituitary gland that is less than 10 mm in size. Headaches, vomiting, vision problems and dizziness are the usual presenting symptoms of pituitary microadenoma. Do you have any? If not then that could be reason your doctor is not concerned. Else you can seek a second opinion from another endocrine specialist. In your case it appears to be a secreating microadenoma releasing hormones. Pituitary microadenoma can be treated by surgery, drug therapy, and radiation therapy. Maybe your doctor has put you on some drugs. Similarly many pituitary cysts do not show nay symptoms nor grow with time and are left alone.About elevated RDW and low iron saturation please consult a hematologist.
I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining you or the MRI.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
