sharp pain in right temporal lobe

My father has been having some headaches located primarily in the right temporal lobe.  They are short-lived and acute and he tries to massage the pain away but it is sensitive to touch.  What are the possible medical explanations for such symptoms and does anyone share similar sensations?  Please help.

Thanks to both of you.  YOur suggestions are appreciated and I will definitely pass them on to my father.

I also have a sharp pain in the right temporal lobe that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to 30 seconds. I started feeling this pain for the first time about 3 weeks ago (around the same time that you posted your question). Sometimes it seems to be in the tempal area and other times it seems to be behind my ear. I am wondering if it will go away or if I should take time off work to go see my doctor. I had a painless swelling under my same ear last year that my doctor said was a clogged gland and that went away after about 3 weeks. I'm hoping that this is also a clogging of something that will go away soon. Did your father ever get his pain checked out?

It barely applies but there is some info I posted to robinloy
on 6/27 'cyst on brain', but forget all the brain cysts. Age
has alot to do w/ how to dx. Men are dx'd sltly different. If
it's a quick-brief-stab, could be related to polymyalgia. Look
for a raised large vessel in temperal area often pale blue.
There are alot of things that touch ea. other in that area that
relay signals to cause temple pain. Can be from neck-posture/an
artery narrowing blood flow/stress spasm/food. If it's been
around along time, best to see a neurologist or start w/ his MD
for referral. MRI may show something. Have him try to keep a
journal even in a sm-day-calendar of when occurs & what was he
doing. Buy a sm. hot/cold pak & wrap w/ washcloth or ?, & dampen well then micro 30 secs ea. side & heat/rest might help. Even a thick wk-out sock wks. well using pak. Always damp & don't over heat. These paks really stay warm a long time & not
expensive. Too much aspirin/tylenol/etc can hurt stomache &
mainly cause re-bound effect. The nerves from ear to temple to
forehead all connect. Inflammation in skull base from chronic
extension can also cause a temple hdache. Ask Dad how bad he
really is.
