stiff neck

I also woke up one morning with a stiff neck out of nowhere.  Essentially, my head was immobile.  I went to my long time chiro and got little relief, but kept going and used ice on it for 10 minutes on 10 minutes off.  Though this seemed very counter intuitive to me, it really helped.  I did not go to an MD, but did wonder about meningitis given the abrupt onset and severity.  However, there were no other symptoms except fatigue which I felt was secondary to the pain and stress of the neck.  I have kept up with the chiro and gotten more relief over time.  He does not mechanically adjust it, but does use an electric stimulation which really helps the mobility and the pain is reduced.  It's about 5 weeks now and I am much improved, but still going 2X a week.  Had a friend who had the exact same symptoms, had spinal tap which was negative for meningitis.  I think it's a weird viral infection.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Sleeping in wrong posture, overuse of computers, neck sprain as in a jerk or car accident and meningitis can all cause stiff neck. However meningitis will also cause other symptoms along with fever.
If this happened suddenly it could be due to ‘torticollis’ or wry neck. This usually disappears on its own after 3 days and should actually be left alone. It usually happens due to sleeping in an awkward position. Neck stiffness can also be due to spinal nerve compression at the cervical vertebral level.
Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!
