sudden knee pain

I woke up last night to unbelivable pain in my knee.  My leg was bent in a natural position and I woke up not being able to straighten it.  It was actually the pain that woke me but I wasn't able to straighten my leg, it felt as if it was locked in place.  It eventually subsided and I was able to straighten my leg, and have had a dull ache in it all day.

Sudden onset knee pain can be due to ligament tear, bursitis (A bursa is a small sac of fluid. It cushions the outside of knee joint so that tendons and ligaments glide smoothly over the joint), meniscus injury or due to dislocation of patella. The pain can be severe enough to be felt throughout the leg or make it impossible to straighten the leg. Please consult an orthopedic specialist ASAP. Until then do not put weight on the concerned leg.
