swollen bump behind the ear on my skull

My husband has a small lump (that you can not see) about an inch from his lower ear.  He said it is very painful and that the pain is going up and down in a vertical line.  Should he have this checked out?

To me, it is a cyst.  Does it feel like it has fluid in it?  Is it raised above the skin?  Although with pain involved, I'd go to the dr. and have it checked out.  If anything, some pain relief

Hello...It is most likely a swollen lymph node.  It is a sign of some sort of infection.  I would definetly make an appointment with his doctor and sooner than later.  Hope this helps!
