swollen labia minora

Hey chikkies,

The same symptoms as most. Swollen labia minora, it is it's usual colour though, sore and hurts to walk or pressure to be put upon it.

I have not seen a doctor and don't intend to, I feel like it might go away on it's own. I am 19, nearly 20, I have 3 sexual partners at the moment.

Last night I had sex with one of them and it was rough fast sex, he came inside me, I felt pretty sore and noticed that i was unusually tight and wasn't very wet at all. I fell asleep soon after and did not clean myself straight away like i usually do. This morning I've found the symptoms I have described above.

Recently I've had a few health issues, I recently got UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), I started taking antibiotics that were prescribed for a family member but I looked them up to see if they would help first. They helped I than ran out and went to the doctors and was prescribed with Cephalexin (Cap 500mg 20). I'm still taking them, I dont particularly think they have anything to do with my swollen labias but I am trying to mention everything that could possibly have anything to do with it.

I have read all the forums. Ice sounds like a good idea, indirect contact of course.

I cleaned myself first thing this morning, it felt very painful and the skin felt leathery and tough, I had a sleep and it felt like the swelling went down, but touching it again now I can not tell if it has gone down or not because it still feels very swollen to me. I have never had a pap smear, I dont want to.. i dont like doctors looking or touching my vaginal area at all. I also forgot to mention that becuase my labias are swollen they are a lot bigger and are hanging down a lot more than usual and I am scared to wear any underwear or jeans. I have never worn Victoria jeans.. I usually wear cotton underwear I'm pretty sure, I do agree that it is shocking and frightening that no one has really come up with the actual diagnosis and cure.

For me right now it is the 22nd of January 2010. I'm pretty sure the first post was like 2006.. anyway hope people can relate with certain things, so that we can figure out what could be causing it, and then find what we can do to prevent it in future, also i do not use condoms, the last time I was checked for any STI's (Sexually Transmitted Infection's) my results all came back negative and my sexual partners I am very sure have no STI's either. I don't use any type of lubricant, not recently anyway, I have very sensitive skin so I do not use harsh soaps and have to have relevantly cool showers.

I hope this helps, hope it wasn't too hard to read, I tried to give as much detail as possible.

I wish us all luck and a cure ( :

I am 24 years old and have tons of the symptoms already mentioned in this forum and another one that was previously posted. My symptoms first started in 2007. I have been with the same partner since 2005. I started getting a bunch of BV and Yeast Infections at first, then came the UTI's, then it turned into pain with intercourse which involved dryness(unable to self lubricate), tightening of vagina, swelling of opening of vagina, redness, burning, itching, the swelling of my right labia, with sensitivity and discomfort when I wipe after the restroom or anything touches it. Now I have to add that I even swell inside and out with oral sometimes. I have gone to many docs and been treated for BV and Yeast a million time. I do believe that I have a Candida overgrowth in my body, systemic but all the docs I have gone too seem like they have no clue what Im talking about. I have searched high and low for answers. I want to feel normal again. Enjoy sex the way I used too. I hate this and wants some answers. I was tested for STI's and STDs in 2004 and just last month, and all were negative. I think maybe it could be a combination of things, candida and perhaps a bartholin cyst. I plan on going to yet another doctor and hopefully get some answers soon. Please update me on any news. I will do the same.

I have experienced swollen labia for a year now amongst a slew of other symptoms. I have basically felt awful for the past year. I have always enjoyed excellent health and a generally good sense of well being.

Last week I could not longer put up with or tolerate my symptoms any longer. I went to another MD and told her all my symptoms and there are many. She took a vial of blood left the room and returned ten minutes later with my diagnosis. She said my large red cell count is large which is usually a sign of vitamin b12 deficiency!!!!! I beleive shes correct. It will be a week tomorrow and I am feeling so much better across the board its crazy! GNC carries a disolvable b12 supplement of 5000 mcg. Ladies, please google vitamin B deficiency. Read up and go get your blood tested. I sincerely hope this information helps others out there!

Hi all,

I am 16 years old nearly 17 and have a swollen left labia,
It first occured about two months back and during the first time it went a very dark red colour and swelled so much that the skin became very tightly stretched, it lasted for about 1 week and was uncomfortable and quite painfull before the swelling went down, however not long afterwards it started again although this time the swelling was less aggressive and not at all painful, it has lasted for alot longer this time around.

I have only ever had one sexual partener and although i have been engaging in fairly rough sex with him for the past year and a half i have never had this problem before.

I am unable to get to the doctors as my parents dont allow me to be sexually active and would get suspicious if i went to the doctors. At first i also thought this problem would go away, please if you have any other suggestions and remedies other than those listed above let me know, im really worried this can only be reversed via surgery.

Paragraph 2, sentence 5.
I just want to make a correction.

If you notice that you are NOT wet when beginning to have intercourse and if you are feeling any discomfort you should immediately stop having sex.

Hello,
So,  I am 22 years old and have had infrequent but recurrent symptoms of the following.
During sex I feel dry, although I am aroused.  I notice that one side of the labia minora is particularly uncomfortable and starts to swell.  After sex it starts to itch at the bottom of the opening and both labia are swollen (sometimes to the size if small golf balls) and very red.  It is extremely uncomfortable to walk or sit normally. The swelling has lasted up to 48 hours in some instances.  I usually notice a numb pain in the labia minora next to the clitoris. Although at one occurrence a small and hard pea sized lump developed there. This had a numb but intense pain when ever any pressure was applied.   Of course, the rougher the sex the worse the symptoms.

I have always treated this by wearing close fitting comfortable underwear that restricted friction on the area.  I also take an anti-inflammatory over the counter medication such as ibuprofen or similar. I also noticed that taking warm baths and cleaning the area gently has helped to provide some relief.  I have also used white vinegar in the bath water and that seemed to speed the recovery.  If you notice that you are wet when beginning to have intercourse and if you are feeling any discomfort you should immediately stop having sex.  Do not ignore it, you will regret that decision.   It is very frightening when this happens, but not hopeless.  If you have a partner be honest with them and discuss what you can do to prevent it.  Relax, use natural lube, (not saliva, I suggest coconut oil) and oral before sex may help.

I have dealt with these symptoms for years and finally have found something that makes sense, considering the symptoms.  It is called a Bartholins Gland cyst or abscess.  With all the symptoms there is most likely there is an infection present.

Please follow this link:
http://women.webmd.com/tc/bartholin-gland-cyst-treatment-overview

...and Google it!

If you have the ALL symptoms that I described and you have done your own  research and you do believe it to be a Bartholin Gland cyst.  Then the next time it occurs see a doctor while the swelling is still present.   Explain what you suspect and insist on getting properly cared for.  Don't let them pass it off as a yeast infection or psychosomatic.   It can persist and continue to get worse.  If you are a woman over 40 the chances of the cyst being cancerous increase so do insist on all proper tests.

I found something that works. My doctor prescribed Nystatin & Triamcinolone Acetonide cream. It contains anti-itch cream and a steroid to reduce swelling. I used it and a few hours later I was back to normal.

One of the main reasons for UTI is not cleaning yourself after sexual intercourse.  You should always go pee right after.  I used to get UTIs very frequently and once I found out that this would help, I started, and I do it no matter how comfy or sleepy or cuddly I feel after sex.  I have not had another UTI since (this has now been years).  Peeing flushes out the bacteria that cause the UTI.  You should also avoid having sex while you have a UTI (eg until it is entirely clear and you are out of medicine.)

The swollen labia COULD be from the rough sex - kind of like a bruise.  Think about it - if your partner were to hit you in the arm a hundred times as hard and as rough as the sex was - do you think your arm would hurt this morning?  What if he was punching you in the mouth - do you think your lip would be swollen?  So that's my guess.  But if the swelling doesn't decrease over the course of the day, I would go to the doctor first thing tomorrow.

So you are currently sexually active with 3 partners, but you don't want a doctor to see you "down there"?  Do you have a regular family doctor?  I do, but I found going to a walk-in clinic where I didn't know the doctor, helped when I had questions about "down there" issues.

Also, you mentioned you don't use condoms...are those 3 guys sleeping with other girls too?  And are those girls sleeping with other guys?  Are any of them using condoms?  Your last STI results may have been clean, but they are irrelevant, because you have had unprotected sex with multiple partners since then.  You should really get tested again.  So, to sum up, my advice to you would be:

- go to the doctor and get him/her to check everything out - your swollen labia as well as test for STIs.  Tell them that you have unprotected sex with multiple partners.  Don't feel like you need to keep this from them because it's embarrassing - it was important enough to your situation to include it here, and trust me, doctors have heard this before. (This is something that I found easier to tell the walk-in clinic doctors because they don't know me or any of my family.)

- continue with your UTI prescription until you have completed it, but refrain from having sex until the infection is cleared.

- when you do have sex again, make sure you pee right after each time, to help prevent future UTIs.  I know it is a hassle to get up sometimes after sex, you just want to lie there, but think about how much more painful and uncomfortable having a UTI for several days is.  It's pretty good motivation to get up for 30 seconds!

- many people will judge you for having multiple sexual partners.  i'm not, because i've been there myself.  but i will chastise you for not using condoms!  when you don't know who the guys are sleeping with, or who those girls are sleeping with, PLEASE use condoms.  Not only will you avoid a lot of fear and worries about pregnancy and STIs this way, but when something does happen (like itchy or swollen labia), the possibility of it being an STI falls.  So will the possibility of you getting pregnant!
