tattoos don't know what to do????????????

I have been throwing around the idea of getting a tattoo put in the lower middle part of my back with a beautiful butterfly.  My question is does it hurt badly, and instead of getting just a black one----I would get a colored one------would that hurt more----please reply to me with any experience you may have had with tatoos!!

Thank you

Giddychic, I  myself have always thought this was a friendly way to get advice about anything and everything ........medically.
I am soory but in your intial post you never mentioned anything at all about being critically ill, so how was i to know? For someone who has had over 30 major surgeries in 5 years, averaging a major surgery every 2 months surely should have every ounce of courage to get a small butterfly tattoo. your first post just struck me way out of contents for this posting board, so please excuse me when you only add your medical "history" in the 2nd posting. I was not judging you and am not a judgemental person, I think you would just have to hear your first post through many of our ears. It kind of reminded me of my sister-n-law complaining of a pimple on her face when I had just been released from the fresno burn center with 50% of my body covered woth 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree burns and many skin grafts. Now I am sorry about your illness which has caused you so many major surgeries..........RaSMaN

Hi, i actully do this for a living. Color paly's no role in the pain you may recieve. It's about how much you can endure and location sensitivity. So were the skin is thicker it's likely to hurt less, and were it is thinner or fleshier (like your inner arm) it's likely to hurt more. Some people feeling lining a tattoo hurt's more then shading-coloring it in, this is true as the less needles you use the more it hurt's and shading-coloring requires more needles.

The pain thought isnt much, well that depends on you, but i find them to just sting a bit, and to be sore for the first few day's afterwords.

Hi,

I got my first tattoo about 6 weeks ago on my lower leg.  They start by tattooing the outline and the artist told me this would be most painful part of the tattoo.  At some points it actually felt like he was slowly cutting my leg with a razor but while on other parts of the tattoo it only felt like a light scratch;  the amount of pain is also dependant upon the location of the tattoo (feet and hands are the most painful, an area with alot of fat is less painful). Incidently, he only tattoed for about 5-10 s at a time which definetly made the process bareable.
The shading, which is done with colored or black ink, did NOT hurt me at all - I was told this is because the angle of the needle is different from that used during the outlining process (and prehaps also the endorphins that have kicked in by this point!).  Also, ink color will NOT effect pain intensity.
Incidently, the tattoo will be very sensitive for a few days after the event (it will have a dull ache and will hurt to the touch - they liken it to a sunburn) and will take about 1 month to heal fully.
Hope this helps!

Just to inform you-----I am not a healthy person----and I thought this was a friendly way to get adivice about anything and everything----not to be rude---and I take your advice to heart-----I have personally had over 30 major surgeries in the last 5 years and still have in my future-----I am highly undiagnosed-------I am on medication monthly and have to travel 2 hours monthly to my specialist------I know about problems because I am personally living with them-----thank you for your frankness------but please do not judge people because of their questions----especially if you do not know them or thier history----this is not a judgemental web-site

thank you!!!

Calm down!! There was absolutly no need for that! Dont like the question........SKIP IT!!! it's real simple.

as for the tattoo, i have one on my upper back/neck and it hurt like crazy, i think only because i wasnt able to see when the needle was getting close, so i was also a little jumpy. the more color there is needed to be filled in, the more painful it will be, but dont let that scare you. I have a total of 4 tattoo's, they are very addicting LOL!!

no offence, but this forum is full of Medically ill individuals, not ones that are voluntering to put their bodies through pain. many of us live day to day with undiagnosed problems, and many of us also suffer daily chronic pain, as I do. I'm sorry but your problem of wether a color Tattoo hurts more than a black one or if it hurts at all to get one just doesn't seem to fit at all on this forum, but this is America and you do have freedom of speech. Maybe you should read a few of the others problems and see if you seem just a bit self centered and uncaring of others Miss Giddychic. Some of us are writing of life changing diseases not a little butterfly tattoo. I have probably had more needles stuck in me for my disease, including a spinal tap, a Pic line to within 2" of my heart and is still in there and many IV's than you would have getting a small tattoo. Sounds like you are a very fortunate healthy person, unlike others. Good luck with you butterfly tattoo Giddychic, God Bless.....RaSMaN
