trying to find the meaning

by jcstorytime, Feb 25, 2009 02:11PM
I recently got test results with Rheumatoid Factor of 520.

I am having muscle weakness and pain as well as pain in joints.  Especially pain is in feet and hands, sometimes knees and leg muscles.  Having trouble walking because of excruciating pain and a feeling of weakness.
I have trouble with stairs, especially going down.  I have trouble getting up from a seated position.

I was referred to a nuerologist ( because of a family history of ALS) and a rheumatologist.

I have been seen by the nuerologist (series of blood and urine testing which has not come back yet) and yesterday had an EMG.  This doctor gave preliminary opinion that I do not have ALS (Thank God!) but still wants to examine all results when he receives them.  He also thinks I should see rheumatologist ASAP.

I am still waiting for an appt. with rheumatologist.

I am wondering what diseases could be indicated as possible by the high rheumatoid factor?

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
High levels of rheumatoid factor can be found in severe rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome, and vasculitis, infections like Hepatitis-C, chronic diseases like tuberculosis, mononucleosis, syphilis, and malaria, leukemia, liver disorders and endocarditis.
Hope this helps. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
