Fart normally?  What's that supposed to mean?  People can make noisy farts because they have more gas.  Some people tend to hold it in until an oprtune time etc.

The smell of the Flatus is due to the type of bacteria present in your gut.  If you don't digest food properly you will tend to produce more gas.  There may be some foods or food combinations that you are intolerant off.  Stress can also make symptoms worse.

Medical Tests:
I don't agree with colonoscopy.  For IBS this is pretty much a waste especially at your age.  And you haven't been complaining about abdominal pains.  You could do the pill cam.  It will take a look at what's going on inside your stomach and small intestines.
But before escalating to any of these you should realy try modifying your diet.

Possible Diets:
SCD diet - Primarily deals with eliminating all grains especially wheat, most dairy except hard cheeses, and some complex starches.  you can see the list here :
http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_a-c.htm

Low carb diet - For people who got problem with carbs

Food combining - Has basic rules for eating and what type food go well together.

My suggestions -
-Greasy and fried foods like french fries etc.  Especially if you have trouble breaking down fat.  As you can't break down the starches until you break down the fat.
-No soda and minimize the amount of drinks during the meal.
-Cut down on bread and gluten containing foods.  If you must eat bread toast it.  From my experience.  May I recomend sprouted grain tortillas
-Consider taking a probiotic.  Comercial yoghurt may be inefective as lactose still remains in the yoghurt.  You can try a formulation like Nutri-Health Flora Calm.  It's supposed to be good for stress.  I've tried a lot of probiotics but I haven't taken this one yet so I can't give any recomendations.
-Excercize can help in some cases.  It improves blood flow through the gut so everything works better.  Walking is good excersize.  Maybe difficult if you are distented.

hope this helps

I have tremendous flatulence only following consumption of a bowl of breakfast cereal with fat free milk.  It seems any type of cereal (whether made with oats, bran, corn, wheat) with milk does me in, and the farts last for 6-8 hours while the cereal/milk are still in my digestive system.  I take a couple Beano or Gas-X tablets and the farts are significantly supressed.  I have had this cause and effect (cereal/milk --> farts) situation for only the past few years.  Anyone have any idea what could prompt a change like this?  I am 46 years old. Milk by itself does not cause flatulence for me.  Would lactose free milk make a difference for when I eat cereal?

By the way I forgot to mention. I have tried Flat-d pads, and other active charcoal flatulance de-odorizers that they sell on the internet. I didnt notice any improvement in the way people around me acted. They acted as animated as they always did. Finally after using them for a month I had to stop using these pads that were causing a bit of allergy as well.

Hi everybody,

I have had this problem on and off for many years now . My story is not so much different.I have been to doctors , then take anti dipression pills. Changed diets etc..

Rice works for me better than other diets, non-ripe banana's are very good for me I eat 5-6 banana's a day two for breakfast and  1-2 after each meal. They have enzymes in them that I think are a bit useful and they have many good minerals and good fibre.  I swim for exercise so banana's are not making me fat .

For the smell of flatulance I think it would be best for all of us to search for a cosmetic cure than a biological cure. From my experience with this problem and consultations with doctors, I feel nothing is physically wrong with my digestion or bowels so there is not much scope for a medical cure to this problem.

I am trying to make a small device a person can wear under his rectum very concealed and small  and  channel air to make air pass through a bottle of nice smelling scent or may be a sponge which is soaked in a nice citrus fruit scent, so the gas coming out is loaded with the nice scent of lime or some other fruit that the person next to you likes . This way the problem is solved.

You eat what you want and when you want, just make sure your gas smells how the nose likes it. This is my idea, I would want to know what you guys think.

Bad news is
( human nose can smell  Hydrogen sulphide too well 0.5molecule in a billion molecules of air , the best man made sensors can only detect 10 molecules  in a billion molecules of air)

So , cheating the nose takes some work and a good scent.
I would like to hear your opinions guys, may be we can all work on this idea and get a fix that works for all of us.

Take care

I have had Ulcerative Colitis for 20 years now.  I was supposed to get regular colonoscopies since 1988, but I only got the one colonoscopy in 1988.   For all I know, I have cancer now.  But I feel ok, and my stools are fine.   Inititally when it was diagnosed in '88, I took prednisone and flagyl but only for a couple weeks, then I discontinued use, and everything has been fine for the last 20 years.

Except one little thing.   I have extremely foul gas which is almost pure H2S (Hydrogen sulfide).  It can clear a room in mniutes.  It is just terrible.  I have been enduring it for 20 years now, and so has everyone else.

I should go to a Doctor to find out what can stop the H2S leaks.  I have no control over the "venting" of this near-lethal gas.

If you understood how foul it was, you would not even be laughing.   Oh, also I drink tons of soda.  That has got to be bad for it, I imagine.

If there is any Doctor out there, please post here and help me.  What can I take to neutralize this horrible H2S ???

I was reading your responses about gas.  I have that also.  went for many tests but did not show anything.  they found it was from a disorder called gastroporesis that is a slow digestive system.  when I eat carbs thats when the flatulence is bad. You could ask for a gastric emptying test.  It could also be from bacteria in your small intestine.  Do a breathe test for this.  I hope this info. helps.

What you describe Fits my situation perfectly. I am 18 years old and have had this problem for many years.I have tried everything. Dieted, tested certain foods, fasted for days, read hundreds of pages of dialog (literaly), been misdiagnosed, and re-diagnosed many times. It has ruined my life so far up to this point. By far the worst experiance in my life i never would have imagined how imbarrasing this problem could be.
being shunned from kids at school and even adult co-workers.
Reading pages after pages of websites all saying pretty much the same thing doesnt boost the moral either when u try them and they have no effect.

The website that helped me the most was  http://www.helpforibs.com even if you dont have ibs it has great tips on gas prevention.

My story...
I had a colonoscopy and was finaly told that my throat and intestines were very swollen and looked like they had been that way for a long time. I was told it was indeed simply IBS and a little bit of Silent heartburn. (although im sure the silent heartburn part wont apply to you).
So at least now I know nothing too seriouse is going on with me like cancer.
I would recomend asking your doctor about the benifits of haveing a colonoscopy if you have not already had one. It can be a small relife to know u simply have IBS.

As for the flateulence what you discribe sounds exactly like my situation.

"i feel perfectly fine besides for this problem i cannot "fart" normally like with a noise even if i tried it always jus came out as air getting pushed out and when i dont want to i jus comes it by itself i have absolutely no control over this"

right on the dot. it felt like you were discribing my own sysmptoms to me!
my diet:
One diet i found that really helped out my situation alot more than i had ever expected any to was the "insoluable fiber" diet, a diet i got from http://www.helpforibs.com
Now, you must understand no website or person can tell you what to eat exactly because each person is differant. Some foods that may stable one person might trigger symptoms in someone else ect ect. im sure you have heard this a hundred times.. anyways about my diet!

Plain white rice - excellent food for someone with gas.
Flaxseed tea - A tea known for its ability to reduce bloating and gas.
Papayas - a food known for its ability to reduce bloating and gas.
Mangoes - Taste damn good and didnt give me gas!
Rice krispies - the only cereal which didnt seem to irritate me.
Rice milk - as Diary and soy are known gas producers.
EXCERCISE! - such as sit ups and >light< jogging. (this really seemed to help me alot.
WATER! - Drink lots of water several minuts before meals, and inbetween to help the insoluable fibers do their work and to help prevent gas. ( not during or right after meals)

At first it didnt seem to help much but by the end of the week i felt almost normal although i had just about forgotten what normal felt like.
However: this is not a nutriciouse diet to follow all your life and im sure you would go insane eating only rice, mangoes, and papayas.. (i used to like rice... now .. not so much). You should really follow a non soluable diet that suits you for a couple of days then slowly start to add soluable fibers into your diets such as adding rasberries to your rice-milkshakes or something. Slowing keep adding foods and learning which ones you need to avoid. For a better more detailed guide written by someone who probably didnt fail an english in their senior year follow the link I gave above.
although i didnt buy anything frm this website it taught me a great deal about insoluable and soluable fibers!
Theres another site that shares the success and horror stories of people with chronic gas that i was looking for when i found this one but i cant seem to find it.. if i do ill come back and link it because i found it helped me a great deal. Keep strong your not in this alone, good luck!

Uncontrollable flatulence can be caused by numerous medical conditions including colitis; celiac disease; Crohn's disease; diabetes; Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS); inflammatory bowel disease; AIDS/HIV; malabsorptive syndromes; pancreatitis; lactose intolerance; and numerous medications including some antiviral medications, antibiotics, and cholesterol lowering medications; and even protein supplements. Most of these conditions are treatable.
The unpleasant odor of flatulence comes from bacteria in the large intestine that release small amounts of gases that contain hydrogen sulfide and methane.
Most gas is produced when bacteria in your colon (large intestine) ferment carbohydrates that weren't digested completely in your small intestine. Your body does not digest and absorb some carbohydrates (the sugar, starches, and fiber found in many foods) in the small intestine because of a shortage or absence of certain enzymes. Certain foods produce more gas than others because they contain more indigestible carbohydrates than others. Beans are a classic example of gas producers. Other high fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes may also increase flatulence. Sugars are known to create gas. Fructose is naturally present in onions, artichokes, pears, and wheat. It is also used as a sweetener in some soft drinks and fruit drinks. Sorbitol is a sugar found naturally in fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, and prunes. It is also used as an artificial sweetener in many dietetic foods and sugar free candies and gums.
Fats and proteins cause very little gas. As long as you don't have one of the medical problems listed above, trying a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet such as the Atkins Diet may help reduce your flatulence. If this doesn't work, a product called the Flatulence Deodorizer may help you reduce any related odor problems. or taking 1 or 2 cups of live cultures yogurt or  pure acidophilus culture or acidophilus milk daily.
