unexplained symptoms after miscarriage

Hi everyone...Hopefully someone out there can shed some light on what could be going on with me.
In september 2007 I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks.  I noticed a few weeks later  that I would become very fatigued much more quickly than usual.  By the end of October...just 2 days after my first period following my miscarriage...I began feeling dizzy and I was becoming sore very easily.  I got my next period two weeks early and the dizziness went away for the most part when my second period ended.  However I began feeling shaky and am prone to anxiety, and then my panic took over.  I have had many symptoms but am not sure what was anxiety and what was not.  I get shaky and dizzy at times and its usually a few days before my period starts and lasts for a few days to a couple weeks after it ends.  I have had hot flashes for a period of about a month.  My throat muscles become swollen when I am tired or sometimes for no reason at all.  I have been having aches and pains all over even when I am not doing anything active to cause them.  And have noticed my sinuses have been swollen since the miscarriage and I have had a sore throat almost everyday since November, at least.
My doctor has run heart tests, CAT scan, blood work, dizzy doctor, thyroid, etc and can't find anything abnormal...except for low iron which I took supplements for and is now relatively normal.  I should also mention that I don't eat many fruits/vegetables or red meat...I'm a weird one. Yet my B12 and folic acid are fine, supposedly.
I am at my whit's end...so if anyone has any suggestions it would mean a lot to me.
Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I thought I would let you know that i have been tested for thyroid, hormones, diabetes, iron, B12, folic acid, among many others recently. And everything came back normal.  My doctor had mentioned that if all came back normal that anxiety and postpartum depression could be the cause.  It's been going on for almost a year now and I am at my whit's end.  Any ideas on whether or not this is possible would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestions

Hi,

In hyperthyroidism the levels of TSH are low and thyroid hormones themselves will be increased.
Hyperthyroidism can also lead to miscarriages and can cause most of the symtoms that you are experiencing at the moment. I would suggest you to discuss this possibility with your obstetrician and get the thyroid tests done again as these levels keep fluctuating. Do keep me posted.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I am 23 years old. The miscarriage and symptoms began while I was still 22.
Thank you.

Thank you for your condolences. I am very sorry to hear of your losses as well.  I bled for about 10 days after the miscarriage but my doctor told me I didn't need a D&C.  With me some days are worse then others.  I have had more symptoms then I have listed but there are so many and are not continuous so I feel very lost.  I do not feel that it is emotional stress or just anxiety, as many others have said.  Some months I get shaky around my period and have pains on the left side of my lower abdomin...which began immediately after the miscarriage.  I had gone for 3 ultrasounds afterwards and they found nothing.  Also I find I usually have an increased amount of discharge when I feel this way, and dizziness.

DrNoopurMD...Is it possible to have been tested for hyperthyroidism and find nothing, yet test months later and have it show up. It has happened to a few people I know. Or is it their doctors making mistakes?
Also, which tests would I have had to take to rule out the other possibilities? I have had a G.I x-ray taken and a chest x-ray, as well.  And my doctor assures me that I am not anemic.  And I don't believe I have had any injury to my spinal cord around that time.  I was a very active person before yet, I am not gaining any weight and, even though I have been eating less lately due to nausea, I am not losing any weight either.
I had begun eating a more balanced diet for about a week before my symptoms began to worsen again. Connection?
Thank you both for your suggestions. Take Care.

Hi,

How old are you?
The reason for hot flashes is generally low estrogens which occurs at menopause. Since you are getting your periods that cause is excluded. Other causes can be hyperthyroidism, emotional stress, carcinoid syndrome, pheochromocytoma, spinal cord injury etc.
Dizziness and shakiness could be due to anxiety or low hemoglobin.
I would advise you to eat a balanced diet with ample servings of fruits and vegetables and discuss all these possibilities with your treating doctor. Take care!

First I want to offer my condolences for your loss. At the time of your miscarriage, did you have a D&C done? I have had 3 miscarriages, and had to have the D&C after each. Twice they tried to "wait and see" but several weeks later I was having symptoms that let them know I needed "cleaned out". While it is interesting that your symptoms started around that time, it would seem that this many months later if that were an issue with you it would have made you really sick. If you've already had a D&C, I'm not of any help. Best wishes as you search for answers.

Sorry I forgot to mention heart palpitations as well...which have lessened in severity since I began taking lorazepam for my anxiety.
